Cross-Stitch

The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC), 3120 McKinney Ave., presents its first 2010 exhibition: Mixed Media, featuring the works of Sedrick Huckaby and Anita Knox in the large galleries and Jack White in the New Works Space. All of the artists explore African and African-American textiles in the "New World" and their impact on American culture. With its rhythmically arranged geometric shapes of colorful scraps of cloth stitched together to create a practical whole, quilt-making is the jazz of the textile world, and while currently being explored on a higher plane by artists, it remains a vital and creative part of black culture. Not only has it been a means for providing economic family needs, it has provided an avenue for blacks to advance their social status. Mixed Media examines the craft and culture and elevates quilting to a fine art. The exhibit opens Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and continues through February 13. Call 214-953-1212 for information or visit the-mac.org. The MAC is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Jan. 9. Continues through Feb. 13, 2010
