H To Tha D

Debating the merits of Houston compared to Dallas seems an exercise in futility. One has enough smog to choke a horse, while the other has an NBA team with a horse mascot and the most embarrassing championship choke in history. One couldn't keep its NFL team but eventually got another, while the other couldn't convince the NFL team that bears its name to play in the city limits. The more you contrast them, the more you'll end up hating them both--until you consider the very talented artists from both burgs. Smackdown II, Houston vs. Dallas is a collaborative exhibit curated by Kelly Moran of Houston's Texas Collaborative and Steve Cruz, director of Mighty Fine Arts in Oak Cliff. Featured artists include Gail Siptal, Lydia Balahutrak, Kelly Alison, Sharon Kopriva, Penny Cerling, Pam Horseman, Chris Hedrick, Carter Ernst, Noah Edmundson and Kelly Moran. Opening receptions are 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the H. Paxton Moore Fine Art Gallery of El Centro College, 801 Main St., and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Mighty Fine Arts, 419 N. Tyler St. The exhibition will be held at both galleries through February 22. Call the H. Paxton Moore gallery at 214-860-2115 or Mighty Fine Arts at 214-942-5421 for more info.
