"In sleep we lie all naked and alone, in sleep we are united at the heart of night and darkness," wrote novelist Thomas Wolfe. "And we are strange and beautiful asleep." Dallas photographer Alicia Stepp-Woody, who professes a lifelong fascination with slumber, might agree. While She Sleeps, Stepp-Woody's exhibition at the Magnolia Gallery, explores the juxtaposition of the sleeping female with the conscious world. Like the moth to the flame, Stepp-Woody is drawn to women and their idiosyncratic beauty, whether her lens focuses on a raven-haired dominatrix in leather and heels or a bride encased in a traditional white dress. A red-lipped blonde photographed for While She Sleeps stares blankly away from the camera, evoking not sleep but the lack thereof. The heart of night and darkness is, if not a gift, a relief. The exhibition continues through February 24 at the gallery, located inside the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village, 3699 McKinney Ave. The gallery is open during regular theater hours.
