The Anvil Experience, Mitra

Tuesday, January 26, at House of Blues

One of the most inspiring rock documentaries ever, 2009's Anvil! The Story of Anvil told the sweet tale of singer/guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow, drummer Robb Reiner and the band they refused to quit. Back in the early '80s, their Canadian metal band had a taste of stardom culminating with a bondage-geared Lips playing his axe with a vibrating dildo at festivals alongside Whitesnake and Bon Jovi. But, thanks to bad management, bad promotion and just plain bad luck, they fell into near obscurity, occasionally playing shows where band members outnumbered the audience—despite the success of bands like Metallica, Guns n' Roses and Anthrax who cited them as an influence. Yet even decades after their dreams of fame—or at least giving up their dead-end day jobs—seemed unattainable to even their most ardent supporters, the childhood friends kept playing, recording and believing in the band. That diligence paid off in the 2007 self-released (and re-released last year by VH1 Classic Records) This Is Thirteen, produced by Chris Tsangarides (who helmed the band's 1982 classic Metal On Metal). It's exactly the kind of shredding riffs, chunky power metal and mystical lyrics you'd expect from old-school metal dudes who never gave up. "The Anvil Experience" includes a screening of Anvil! followed by a performance by the band. Hopefully "Lips" brings the dildo. Dallas metalheads Mitra open.
