Walt Whitman fans turning up for Leaves of Grass will be reassured to find, yes, a few bearded young men in this new photo exhibition, but they may be surprised to find that it's about Afghanistan. Documentary photographer Jared Moossy helps connect the show's title to his work by referencing an African proverb that says it's "only the grass that suffers" when two elephants fight. Peeling back the layer of conflict photography by which we know Afghanistan best, the Brooklyn-based, Texas-born photographer catches quiet moments of barbers and poppy farmers. Billed as an "intimate photographic portrait," Moossy's shooting is, at times, also bigger than most documentary work, catching sweeping vistas of Kabul at dusk, and men dwarfed by ancient, bullet-scarred walls. Without soldiers or guns, Moossy casts the war as a hazy sheen behind which everyday life goes on. In what would be lighter moments, people shop, play music and ride horseback, batting around a headless goat carcass--but creeping shadows and stray silhouettes conspire to create the sense of a troubled place. Catch Moossy at the opening artist's reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, or check out his work through February 27 at Norwood Flynn Gallery, open Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 5:30, at 3318 Shorecrest Drive.
