As far as witches go, the one in Hansel and Gretel is especially wicked--a calculating cannibal who cages children, luring them to their demises with the things they desire most. At first look, what Hansel and Gretel desire most are sweets. But when we realize that the story begins with their father abandoning the children because he can't afford to feed them, a greater need comes to light. The children are so starved--and we don't necessarily mean for lollipops--that they totally ignore the danger. But, like other Grimm fairy tales, that element can be a bit heavy for child audiences. So, when it's told through a puppet show at the Dallas Children's Theater, Hansel and Gretel are simply lost in the woods, dazzled by a candy house and forced to rely on their wits to escape and live happily ever after. Hansel and Gretel as performed by Kathy Burks' School of Puppetry Arts shows at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through March 21 at the Studio Theater at Dallas Children's Theater's Rosewood Center for Family Arts, 5938 Skillman St. Tickets are $14 to $20.
