When Equus opened in London's West End in 2007, the fact that Harry Potter himself (or Daniel Radcliffe, as he'd probably prefer to be called) was to be naked onstage caused a great deal of controversy. It is clear, however, that these individuals are in no way familiar with the plot of this play, because if they were, the nudity should have been the last thing they were concerned about. Equusis the story of the exchange between a mentally disturbed youth, Alan Strang, and his psychiatrist, Martin Dysart. Because of respective mommy and daddy issues that leave Alan spiritually and sexually confused, he transfers all of his erotic passion to horses, specifically Equus, for which the play is named. You can use your imagination as to where the nudity comes into play and whether or not that image is more disturbing than the entire premise of the play. Either way, The Uptown Players will present their production starting Friday at the Kalita Humphreys Theater, 3636 Turtle Creek Blvd. Showtimes are 8 p.m Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through March 21. Tickets are $30 to $40. Visit uptownplayers.org for tickets and more information.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Feb. 26. Continues through March 21, 2010
