The Music of the Night

Who was that masked man? Was it the Lone Ranger? Was it Zorro? No, it was that good old stalwart, The Phantom of the Opera. This musical joyride of thrills and tears was first performed in 1986, and it's still playing to packed houses worldwide. The show was birthed by superhuman English hit factory Andrew Lloyd Webber, so it should come as no surprise that the extravagant production won seven Tony awards in 1988. In fact, Phantom is so popular that it's taken on a life of its own. It's a living, moving juggernaut of sound and vision. In 2006 it even surpassed Cats and became the longest running show on Broadway. Believe it or not, it's still playing on Broadway, and some of the original cast members from the 1988 debut are still in the current production--now that's dedication. With all the records it's broken and all the people lining up to see it again and again, I think it's safe to say that Phantom is the Avatar of musicals. Look behind the mask when Dallas Summer Musicals presents The Phantom of the Opera at the Music Hall in Fair Park. The show runs through March 14. Mondays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 17. Continues through March 14, 2010
