Ahh, film parodies--they don't make them how they use to. Sure, Scary Movie got a few giggles out of us, but you lost us after 2, 3, and 4. And now you have the whole thing going on where the people behind the film are too lazy to even come up with a decent name for the flicks, instead choosing the lame way out with titles like Disaster Movie or Date Movie. We have a tip for the film folks--why don't you set aside some time this weekend, let's say around midnight on either Friday or Saturday, and travel down to the Inwood Theatre (5458 West Lovers Lane) to watch Mel Brooks' Spaceballs? If you aren't familiar with the 1987 science fiction spoof of Star Wars, then let me brief you on it. The film takes place in the future, of course, on the planet Spaceball, where president Skroob (played by Brooks) has presided over the wasting of all the planet's air, forcing him to concoct a nefarious plan to steal oxygen from the neighboring planet, Druidia. Somehow a runaway princess bride, a flying Winnebago captain, his over-sized dog sidekick and many others get caught up in the air scheme, resulting in some hilarious hijinks.
