Kitchen Dog Theater holds its annual New Works Festival with this new play by Zayd Dohrn as its central production. Set in a dirty Phoenix trucking office, the action unfolds in overlapping episodes in a story of human trafficking, paternal bullying, unlikely love and obsession, and brutal murder. What feels like a screenplay consigned to the stage starts to spin out of control when the violence erupts. There's lots of bloodshed. Vomiting, too. And descriptions of the bowel habits of long-haul truck drivers will completely erase all thoughts of those post-show burritos. Performances by Drew Wall and newcomer Ani Celise Vera (a Laredo dancer making her Dallas theater debut) are excellent. But overall the play feels out of whack as it tries for cinematic jumpcuts and special effects. Through June 26 at Kitchen Dog Theater, 3120 McKinney Ave. 214-953-1055. Reviewed June 3.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., June 6, 2 p.m.; Wed., June 9, 8 p.m.; Sun., June 20, 2 p.m.; Wed., June 23, 8 p.m. Starts: May 28. Continues through June 26, 2010
