Going on an African safari would be totally badass. But as far as affordable vacation destinations go, they rank very near the bottom of that list, surpassed only by trips to the moon (just ask Lance Bass). Fear not, because the Dallas Zoo has the perfect solution. At 9 a.m. Friday, the zoo will be debuting a new $30 million, 11-acre habitat. This new haven, dubbed the Giants of the Savanna, will feature lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes and numerous other species (basically every animal featured in The Lion King) geared towards providing zoo-comers with an African safari-esque interactive experience. While you're there, you will have the chance to visit DFW newcomer Gypsy, a 27-year-old African elephant rescued from a life in entertainment to spend her days enjoying the Texas weather (which we could all easily argue could seem just as hot as that of Africa). The grand opening will run until 10 p.m. and the exhibit will be open seven days a week thereafter. Price is $12 for adults and $9 for children and seniors. Visit dallaszoo.com for more information.
