hat part of "ILLEGAL" immigrant do you people not understand?!
It si because these folks are traipsing over to the US and abandoning their responsibility to fight for their homeland, rights, etc.. that they become a burden wherever they land.
Now they have more rights and privileges than many hard working American laborers who have to pay for their own food, insurance, hospitalization, school lunches, et cetera.

I've been following this article and the comments for several days now and decided this was a topic I'd like to offer "my two cents worth" on. Though I rarely agree with all the comments on any article I can certainly empathize with the majority of those that have posted on this situation. It is a situation that I find very problematic in so many ways. Compassion has been mentioned but "stolen" compassion is not compassion, is it? The WWJD question entered my mind and though I am a pastor I find it hard to find a biblical precedence for someone taking from me so they can give compassion to someone who is actively breaking the law. This is not to say that I don't feel for this lady and her family but I don't feel it is in any way right for our government to take from us so they can skim the top and spend the rest on people who are not citizens of the United States of America. America is a very giving nation, or at least we have been for many years but giving versus having it stolen from you under the guise of compassion is wrong on so many levels. My prayers go out to this lady and her family but I'd rather not see our dollars go out to her after they've been lifted from our pockets. Compassion, yes! Theft to help a criminal, probably not!

News flash - - Julia's status as an illegal immigrant is not the only disqualifying factor she faces. If you do not have medical insurance or cash money, regardless if you are an illegal immigrant or a US Citizen, you will not be placed on any organ list for organ transplant. I speak from experience. This is just an attempt to win sympathy for the illegal immigration cause. There are plenty of legal ways to come into this country LEGALLY. Illegals aliens make a conscious choice to break the law and enter into the US illegally. They should be willing to accept the responsibilities and consequences of that choice.

They have no loyalty to us or our system of government, laws or borders. That makes them traitors to their own country and thiefs and criminals in this country.
Does this mean that these are the kind of people we want to come here and we want to protect them??? I've seen poverty...Believe me, Spend a week in the Phillipines or in parts of Africa; You'll see people who have nothing !!! Except the pride in themselves for making the best of a bad situation. I'm much more inclined to help someone who tries to help themselves... not by stealing or robbing or doing something illegal.
I pity this woman and the situation she has put herself in.
Maybe she should have considered these things earlier...Is it really the United States mission to aide and abet felons and then reward them for criminal activity. I think we should take care of OUR own citizens first.
-
patrick 07/07/2010 6:00:00 PM
Pity.
I feel bad for her... too bad she couldn't have followed the rules and come here legally...She might have saved valuable time and been eligible for benefits she otherwise is not entitled to.
Maybe Guatemala will take care of her and pay her medical bills.

A homeless person breaks into your house and decides to live in your closet. It’s inconvenient because you need that closet for your stuff. But what if that homeless person demanded that you feed him and cloth him and pay for his doctors visits? You think twice before paying for clothes, food, and medicine for your own family! Much less this homeless person who forcefully entered your house.
America is OUR home. There are rules to entering our house. You MUST ask, you MUST be invited. You don’t decide it’s in your own best interest and commandeer what you think should be yours.
America has enough trouble feeding, clothing, and healing legitimate citizens. This is a sad sad story and my heart goes out to the family. It’s a risk you take when you enter someone’s house illegally. This story should be in every newspaper in Mexico so people understand the risks and outcomes possible when residing illegally in United States.

My wife is an immigrant. A LEGAL immigrant. She cannot stand illegal immigrants knowing the amount of time and money we paid to bring her here legally. She is amazed that people will come here and not even attempt to speak English. (Her English is not perfect but she has little trouble communicating with others.)
The worst racists? Mexicans. Do you know what the radio station "La Raza" really means? "The Race", like the Mexican race. And yet, if we want to go to Mexico, demand free health care, demand that police speak English, and demand that the schools be taught in English, we would be laughed at!

ASH> Focusing on issues of health care has ignited a bomb in this country. You see therein lies the problem...our government cannot negotiate a decent affordable plan for the PEOPLE of the United States but then we have articles like this where we should have a bleeding heart and take care of people who enter in illegally with major medical problems who has not taken the steps to become an American citizen. Let me understand this.. to the Average American citizen who has insurance and pays astronomical premiums or who has been denied services by their insurance company STOP...WAIT...you are more privileged than this person who has entered the US unlawfully, Show your humanity and take a step back and allow us to help this illegal with their medical problems. American citizen, you should be ashamed of your hateful self, you live in the land where the streets are paved with gold, where anything is suppose to be possible...except affordable health care for our people. Maybe we are stupid americans. When insurance companies can organize a protest in the capital and people actually sign up to protest healthcare for everyone and the fight the politicians who voted against healthcare for everyone waged.... where do you think the anger comes from. Where is the humanity there ? Do you think this issue would be a heated topic if the US had a decent, fair, affordable healthcare plan? We would help any and everybody regardless of where they are from because that is what we do best.

notagain3> I beg to differ. When you have statements like "why should we care?" and "Why should we feel sorry for this scum that has come here to live off OUR country" that seems a tad hateful to me. If anything this story illustrates HUGE gaps in our system and the way it works. Both health care and immigration wise. THAT is what we should be focusing on. Fixing those issues, as well as going after the AMERICAN based companies that advertise jobs in Mexico and bring immigrants over illegally. I've never seen an ICE raid on any of those executive's houses. We've never seen their families ripped apart because of what they've done illegally in our country. Our health care system is broken, our immigration system is broken, we have been divided by these issues. But it's time for us to stand together on something... anything would be good at this point.

notagain3 07/06/2010 6:27:00 PM
To those who feel these comments are harsh and heartless (Sadness and Ash).
that poem indicates people who came by any means necessary but LEGALLY. The illegals take advantage of what you just described, our humanity. Our humanity should not be characterized by other nationalities as "stupid american" . What other country can someone who entered illegally have protest marches, demand their language be spoken, seek and find employment specifically targeted for them, buy real-estate, consistently break laws, etc.. I don't believe statements made here are hateful or bigoted. But the illegals and for that matter the mexican-americans should not exhibit racism themselves. Just like one female interviewed on tv stated "they have come to take Texas back". Now where did hey get rhetoric like that from? Changes are needed in our immigration policies but not to protect people who have entered illegally. This is a serious problem in this Country, recognize it. Race, origin, color has always played a role in the past and present and most likely the future.

Choosing the lesser of two evils . is still choosing evil. We have lost our humanity by catagorizing ourselfs in bookshelves being labled by our origins race, color, etc. Yet we forget we are all human live in the same world , yet one may think that they are special. just like everyone else. There is always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher.

Ash Waggoner 07/06/2010 4:26:00 PM
I'm surprised. When did we as a nation loose our humanity. Yes, she is illegal, yes what she did was wrong. But she is a human being. When did that stop being important? When did your nationality become more of an issue than making sure you are safe and healthy. I believe the poem goes "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!". When did we forget that? Remember that we're all people, that's what is important. As Americans we are better than these polarized rants and cold hearted douche bag comments. Grow up, remember your heart.
If anything this is a story that should evoke strong emotions about change in our immigration policy, making sure people can get into this country legally and safely. Lets focus our energy on that, not on being hateful bigots.

Zuloo 07/06/2010 4:23:00 PM
Why should we worried about her? Feel sorry for her? I am an american barely made my ends meet throught every day. I do not have the luxury to have free health care as she does. She has better care than me. I worked through my illness. I pretended that I was not sick so I could work and have never missed a day at work. I have not complain because I have no one to complain to. I came here 45 years ago from Vietnam with an immigration Visa. It took me three years to apply for a Visa. I came here on my own and went through all difficulties to apply for an immigration Visa. I had to take a test after 3 years to become US citizen. I spent my free time to study US policies and constitution from the books that the State Department gave to me. It was very difficult but I got through it without the help from anyone. In order to live in free country you have to learn to become one. This person Julia is lucky, everyone is looking out for her and find way to help her. I wish I would have that lucky....

Unbelievable - I am sorry for her situation BUT CITIZENS of the country should be able to obtain a transplant before an illegal can!! WE as tax payors deserve the right to be at the top of the list - I am sick and tired of paying Property, School and City taxes to support illegal immigrants and their anchor babies!! What happened to my rights and the rights of all Americans??? I work hard and have 30% of my income going to taxes ie: Social Security, Medicare, Federal Taxes
Illegals don't! I pay for health insurance and STILL have to cover a deductable before I am pay a co-pay! I can't get treatment at Parkland because I make more that the poverty level. Enough is enough! My Grandparents are probably rolling over in their graves! And STOP with the "if your are not a Native American" crap - I was born here and that makes me an AMERICAN!
-
Lisa 07/06/2010 6:14:00 AM
I work 40 plus hours a week. I have 2 kids to support and I have to pay for insurance on myself and my kids, Since I made about $500 more than the income requirement to qualify for any type of assistance. I pay for my medication and one kid's medication at over $200 per month. I don't get any help at all with the cost of the medication and it cost me $140 each time that we have to go to the doctor.
I am a U.S. citizen and I don't have an insurance policy that will pay for anything until I meet a $2500 deductible for the year for just me. I have a broken wrist right now, and I don't have the $1000 to go to an orthopedic doctor to get a cast put on. So I have to make do with a splint that I got from an after hours urgent care office that I had to sit for 5 hours in over the holiday weekend. Because I didn't want to go to the ER and pay thousands of dollars that they will bill me for in a month or two and I don't have the money to pay.
I feel bad for this person, but I also work full time and I have 2 kids that have an insurance policy through my job that makes me spend $2500 on each of us before it kicks in at 70/30%.
Why should an illegal person in the U.S. get better care than my family gets being here legally? I make enough money to pay my bills. I have to pray to GOD that nothing else comes up before the next pay day happens. How is this fair? I pay taxes and do things legally and I don't get any extra help. When and if I get to the point of having a medical condition that I really can't afford, I pray that I will be able to get help when I need it.

again reading this article. The criminal broke our laws to take from americans who obey the law.
We support her children with food stamps, special education, and welfare. Her family decided to sponge off the US was better than working in her country. They came from rich people (they owned a chicken farm) but that required they work as a family. No family here just a bunch of criminals raising criminals

I am so tired of these stories. STOP...if you really look at the situation, why does she have a 4 month old child, where is the father...why does not she speak english....Your story is telling me, the doctors need to learn spanish so they can communicate with the patient yet the patient has been in the US for ten years and does not speak english....They take advantage of our generosity and tread on us. People talk abut their expressive pride exhibited when protesting their rights..I see differently. In Texas, I see drug money financing the more established. I'm tired of every fool that get on TV and state they just want to come here to work, they want a better life, are you blind, they work to go to the clubs on the weekend to drink, they get public assistance to pay for food, health care, etc, section 8 while they have 10 babies. Their kids are filling the schools to the brim, free lunches, even the parents want to participate in that. The mothers are HIGHLY uneducated and they are RACIST...They can buy their trucks and their house that holds 10-20 people, put a fence and play that CLOWN music that you can hear 4 blocks away. The public parks are full every weekend. This is not what I want America to be (Mexico), learn what you can, learn something and go back and make your country strong and prosperous. Let the people vote since government can't decide what to do.

Kathy 07/04/2010 4:00:00 PM
As I reread this article, I noticed that this illegal immigrant came to this country for free health care for her child because it would cost her in her country.
Lots of legal Americans cannot afford health care but this article seems to think that because this woman is a criminal and refused to stay in her own country and address the problems there, we should pay for her and her families health care and neglect citizens who are hard working and law abiding.
I feel for her but I feel for law abiding people that are waiting and can't afford and don't qualify for free health care because they won't lie about how much the family is making.
Criminals and cowards are criminals and cowards. It doesn't change because they speak spanish.
-
Kathy Bell 07/04/2010 2:23:00 PM
Emma, Why don't you take your paycheck and pay for her hospital costs. That would be compassion and I am sure she would appreciate it.
All Taxpayers are paying for them. While you are at it, pay for the americans that can't get health care because they work. This woman has had a child at the cost of the taxpayers. Otherwise, she would have had a doctor to go see. The 4 month old was born somewhere and she didn't get deported so she lied and ran off not paying the bill.
Illegals have no problem breaking laws, they are cowards since they did not stay in thier home country to change it. They are here for greed without the work.

nydia pina 07/03/2010 8:33:00 PM
Donna unless you're American Indian, you should get sent back 2 ! Aren't U an anchor baby ?
-
Donna 07/03/2010 8:12:00 PM
While Ifeel sorry for this woman, the main thing that gets me is that because she is indigent, she gets all the medical care and medicine for free or little money. People who work have to pay out the nose for the same care!! And, to top that off, she is illegal. She has no rights to any free care. There are people in the US who work hard, and pay for their insurance who cannot get this kind of care. It is not up to the US to provide health care for everyone who gets across the border or who is here legally who will not work. Note, I said, will not work. Those who can work and will not work an keep having children to get more welfare are in the same boat as this woman.
There is no bottom line for this situation and no fix. However, I am in support of illegals being sent back home and anchor babies losing their citizenship.
-
Kathy Bell 07/03/2010 12:27:00 PM
1) latinos are of european and native american decent. 2) Spain had control over Florida, Tejas, and California but was driven out of the states because of its government system that is similar to Mexicos. 3) I feel sorry for the young children starving in Africa, the young children that are murdered by sexual preditors, the young children that die from cancer. I feel sorry for the bad things that happen to people but that does not mean I should be forced to pay for their problems because they and thier parent refused to act.
Sadness is a way of life, criminals are not. Stand up, make your governments better, stop coming to this country to become slaves, produce more children than you can afford, and get sick sucking off the system.

Frank Luska 07/03/2010 8:04:00 AM
Ok,so whats the point, hundreds or thousands of Americans have died needing heart transplants, am i supposed to feel more sorry for someone who broke the law than for my own countryman? Teaching her children to break the law, taking money, jobs that should be a naturalized citizens? Yes, i do feel sorry for those less fortunate, but to ignore this same thing is happening here is stupid and must have an alternate agenda. We can not even take care of our own, but were are supposed to take of the rest of the world too?
-
Emma 07/03/2010 6:19:00 AM
Wow. The name calling...the cruelty of the words in some of these comments. Unbelievable. I certainly hope I never have the misfortune of meeting any of you who have said such nasty things. This woman is ILL, she needs help. Whatever happened to compassion?
-
Consuelo Mercado 07/03/2010 3:47:00 AM
I have American relatives who live in Mexico. One of their children died in a crappy hospital in Mexico because they didn't have the money up front and they were too slow in getting the money together. If this woman gets a heart transplant, that means that some American who's ancestors probably built this country for hundreds of years, who should have gotten the heart, will probably die. We cannot save the world and also save Americans. We need to prioritize, and our own citizens need to come first. Mexico sure doesn't worry about medical care for Americans, even emergency care. Ask my relatives in Mexico.

There are American citizens waiting on transplants and they should always come FIRST! Who's the moron reporter that felt this was a necessary story?
-
nydia 07/02/2010 11:40:00 PM
No one mentioned what happens to the immigrant's organs ? They are allowed to donate BUT not receive ? Plus she has WORKED as much as she could. Did not live for free like everyone assumes. Everyone should have a right to move to or live where ever they want as long as the law is followed. Don't be so small minded, what's wrong with learning about other cultures ? She has not learned English but then not everyone has the ability to learn when we get older.

Chip Dawson 07/02/2010 11:38:00 PM
Here is another heart breaking story, my 40 year old sister was born Legally in the United States of America in Colorado. She grew up in a small town, did not attend college but graduated from high school. She took the low paying fast food jobs and grocery store clerk positions she could get with here education. She got pregnant three time over the years and each time her family had to help her pay 80% of the medical bill because she never had good enough health insurance. She irked out a living as a low income legal American borrowing from me and other family members when she necessary to survive and make ends meet. We never expected her to pay us back because she did not have the means and we're family. Her teeny salaries were always taxed by the IRS in the years she did work so she made even less than minimum wage and had to support herself and her 3 kids on it. The legal system was never successful in collecting back child support, but she continued to struggle on to keep her children cared for, waiting for a bus in the early mornings and late nights since she had no money to afford a car and her tax paying born in the USA legal citizen family continued to help when they could. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with aggressive cervical cancer while in between low paying minimum wage jobs. No insurance, she was not able to get the medical help she needed. Back and forth with SSI, denied and re-apply and continued to get partial pain treatment from church funded aide programs and money for treatments from all of our family members and friends. Finally dying with her devastated family at her side, unable to get the medical help she needed to keep the cancer from spreading brutally throughout her body placing multiple tumors in her chest, neck, lungs and over a dozen in her brain. No she was not an illegal alien, she was born of citizen of the United States of America. One who had been denied food stamps because she worked and was legal and so were her children, asked for Medicaid but could not get it because she was legal and applying legally through the system. No, she could not qualify for subsidized medical assistance like the illegal alien who was in the hospital receiving state and government subsidized chemo treatment. The American stories are just as hard and sad, even sadder because they are here legally and they deserve better too.

Nice story, Shefali, but you left out some information that I would have liked to have seen. Julia is obviously a hard worker, but why has she not taken the time to learn English in the 12 years that she has lived in America? Also, I didn't see anything in the story about how she has applied for legal status in the country. It seems that one of the first things one should do when they desire to live in another country is to at least try to obtain legal status and learn the language. I understand that our immigation system is length and expensive, but she managed to pay some smugglers $5000 to get her here and an undisclosed sum to get her son here, so she is obviously able to acquire at least some money. I would like to know if she tooks steps to try to become a US citizen and, if not, why not.
-
Chris 07/02/2010 10:20:00 PM

Why are we writting about this? This is a load of CRAP! Are we now to feel sorry about illegals and want them to be granted amnesty? I still say no! Wait your turn. How are we to know if you're a crimminal or not? That is what the background check is for. Why ahould we take every countries crimminals? Look at what we got going on here. If we just made a law that if you're not here legally then you get no health care they's all go home. It doesn't matter what's wrong with you if you're not here legally NO healthcare for you period! This would stop alot of. No more babies being born here because we won't see you. Doesn't matter! I don't like it that you break the law and then oh come here we'll help you out! NO!

How many US citizens CAN'T get transplants? Why should Dr's in a US hospital have to speak SPANISH, this woman should be deported IMMEDITATELY home along with her children. When I hear/see what law abiding US citizen and those here legally are paying for meds and medical care or having to go without because they can't afford it and yet we GIVE it away to illegals it makes me sick.
Time to get rid of all these criminals and take care of our own. We have elderly that need care before they do.

I totally agree with the commenters here. My heart goes out to Hoolia and her health problems, but if things are difficult in your home countries, illegals, why not stay and try to make them better? It seems cowardice to leave when things get hard. I can understand the greed motive to make more $$$ here than at home, but we don't have any more jobs for you guys. Stay home and start a revolution.
