A complete overhaul of the book of this 1966 Strouse-Adams musical has been achieved by comic book author and screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The result is a fresh, new American musical comedy that has great possibilities for success beyond its current run at Dallas Theater Center at the Wyly Theatre downtown. Matt Cavenaugh, who starred on Broadway recently in Urban Cowboy and Grey Gardens, plays the Man of Steel (and Clark Kent), soaring down to the stage on clearly visible wires that don't spoil any of the spectacle (come on, it's always cool when an actor gets to tumble around mid-air). Cavenaugh's real-life wife, Broadway songstress Jennifer Powers, is a knockout as Sydney Sharp, a Daily Planet gossip columnist determined to reveal Superman's real identity. Too bad she can't get anyone to see that without the glasses, Clark Kent looks an awful lot like the super hero. With a huge cast of local stars and Broadway imports, director Kevin Moriarty finally stages what feels like a major hit show (after three seasons of trying). The sets are expensive and numerous, costumes are lavish and cartoon-funny. Broadway and TV veteran Patrick Cassidy (David and Shaun's bro) is the standout as arch-villain Max Menken, a role Patrick's late father Jack debuted in the original Broadway production (which had a brief run way back when). Villains don't come any handsomer or sexier than Max. Quite the comic actor Patrick is, too. Dallas actress Cara Statham Serber plays Max's devoted secretary, Miss Nessbit, to the hilt, bringing down the house with her bitterly hilarious solo in the second act. The show's full of sneaky jokes for comics fans, movie buffs and theater mavens (see if you catch the line from Streetcar), but it's family-friendly all the way.
