Duck and Cover

Ain't no party like a LAN party, and every August, thousands of gamers from around the world stream into Dallas for the largest one in the world: QuakeCon, billed as "the Woodstock of gaming." Built around a series of Quake Live tournaments with around $50,000 in prizes--plus a pair of new Shelby Mustang GT500's--it's an epic bring-your-own-computer event, and it has been for nearly 15 years. From the first casual meet-up of id Software devotees at a Best Western in Garland, the conference has grown to a no-sleep orgy of gamer news and virtual shooting that has the run of the Hilton Anatole for four days. As he has every year, John Carmack--the gaming guru behind Doom, Quake and Rage--will deliver a keynote talk about what id Software's been up to (Doom 4 rumors, anyone?), while other game design leaders lead specialized panels throughout the tournament, drink at the hotel bar and do pretty much anything other than sleep. QuakeCon runs Thursday through Sunday at the Hilton Anatole, 2201 Stemmons Freeway. Admission is free; bring your own computer and visit quakecon.org for a schedule of panels and more info.
