The 'Boys Grown Up

We're all familiar with the on field spectacle of professional football, but few know the struggles that go on behind the scenes of this beloved-but-brutal sport. All those years of hits and concussions can catch up with a player, which is why benefits and retirement packages have become such a hot button issue in for the league. The Unbroken Line, a new book by former Cowboys tight end Billy Joe Dupree and attorney Spencer Kopf, tells the story of the 1982 NFL strike--which stopped play for 57 days as the NFL Players Association fought for higher compensation--as well as the sometimes heart-breaking tales of the now-retired players involved at the time. And with the league's current collective bargaining agreement set to expire in March 2011, the story couldn't be timelier. Kopf won't be on hand somewhat ironically due to sports-related injuries, but Dupree and a few other former Cowboys (including Charles Haley, Tony Hill, Waddell Smith and John Fitzgerald) hit Barnes & Noble, 7700 West Northwest Hwy, Suite 300, for a signing and discussion of the book from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
