Soul Asylum

At some point in adult life, things that are supposed to symbolize innocent fun in childhood become terrifying. Or maybe the fear is always there, but only as adults can we finally admit that the clown at a neighbor's birthday party haunted our dreams or that we didn't want to be alone in a room with Aunt Mabel's doll collection. The reality is simply a Freudian dislike for the "uncanny"--those things and places that seem simultaneously familiar and repulsive. And horror movies have made great use of the idea in movies such as IT, Child's Play and The Shining. Less known but relying on the same concept is Carnival of Souls, a 1962 horror film that follows a near-drowning victim through her encounter with an abandoned fairground. Once again the familiar becomes uncanny as Level Ground Arts presents Carnival of Souls: Purgatorium, a twist on the cult film set in post-Katrina New Orleans. The show opens Thursday at KD Studio Theater, 2600 N. Stemmons Freeway, at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 214-630-5491 or visit levelgroundarts.com.
Thu., Sept. 23; Fridays, Saturdays; Fri., Oct. 29; Sat., Oct. 30. Starts: Sept. 23. Continues through Oct. 16, 2010
