It make you really want to get active. Treatment such has this HAS to stop, for christ sake is there no humanity left on earth. I guess for some people the term "cash rules everything around me" is all too true. Money isn't worth it. SMDH. I mean i know they are illegal but when your put ween a rock and a hard place and you have no way to survive then of course your going to do what you have to do in order to survive. America was founded on the belief of a better life - why else do you think europeans came here, forcing natives off their land. They wanted freedom and did what they had to do to get and and I feel the Mexicans and any other race for that matter wants to do the same. It easy to say go back where you came from... but we dont know what it really is they're going back to.

We're not allowed to travel to Mexico without a visa??! Hmmm, i've lived on the U.S. / Mexico border (San Diego, CA) for the entire 43 years of my life, and that's news to me!! I've gone there and back countless times, with nothing but a CA I.D., and often, not even that! No one has EVER asked to see any papers on the way in, and only after 9/11 have they started asking for passports on the way back into the U.S...

Lesha 01/26/2011 7:01:00 PM
Well, "B," I'll believe your stance isn't racist the day I see equal attention paid to the Canadian border.

Firstly, your spelling, punctuation and grammar are atrocious, just like the other rabid conservative on this page (Andrew). Yikes...
I don't know how this old saw about "hordes of illegals sapping the welfare system dry" got started; As a former recipient of Food Stamps, etc., I can tell you with absolute certaintly that they require valid state identification and a Social Security card. "Let's respect each other"-- "God bless everyone!" --Do you REALLY think that Jesus Christ would be any respecter of U.S. Border policy??! Wow...

John Seit you act like every other liberial I know. If you don't agree with someone you attack instead of stating your position. Your and this author Stephen Lemmons are nothing but jokes. The constitution applies to American citizens and those in are country legally it has never applied to illegals. They are here illegally in the first place deport them back where they came from deep inside of Mexico the way Eisenhower did it in the 1950s. Then shoot anyone trying to cross into are country and this will stop.

-

This is nothing but a "stat" builder for DHS (USBP) and the US Attorney's offices.
Now all of the "economic aliens" who are caught again can be counted as "criminal aliens" by DHS. Further proof for McCain and his cronies that the US is being invaded by "criminals' from Mexico.
And were there not a few jail builder cronies pushing SB 1070 and this insane operation? Sweet, make more money off of the taxpayers by abusing migrant farm workers.

illegal means illegal! (braking the law) people usually get arrested . Any one wanting to enter the U.S.A should go through the proper channels. Many people do. Now i am from a Hispanic background and i see and hear a lot. We have so many Hispanics here working illegally that American citizens can't get jobs and with our unemployment rate so high it is very unfair and most of the illegal people get welfare food stamps free housing and i see citizens who can't get a job and can't get a house and they are hungry and cold and can't get medical, but illegals can and do .That is a tragedy and all the money going to illegals and politicians pay raises I am sorry folks but that's the way it is And when you reward illegal activity. What do you expect! but' More of the same. I respect other peoples countries when i visit as should others respect ours . The realm of the politicians are actually using the Hispanic people to cause anger and hatred ,to get votes because the politicians want votes and they Dangle the golden carrot with the ,I feel sorry for you - To get your vote, But the real intention is to get you to put that political person in a position of power and they will use you till they get what they want. So to avoid being used do what is right do it legally and then there are no problems. Lets respect each other and do things the right way it makes life so much more peaceful . Most people have some pride and don't like to be belittled . There is a false charity! and most people don't like it. So ask yourself what is the motive and the intention of the heart?!!!!!GOD BLESS EVERYONE!

This entire series has been a joke (if it was intended to be journalism, it has been a miserable failure). It is really very sad that when people break the law they are made to suffer consequences; I mean, what have we come to as a nation. Why can't everyone just do what they feel like doing? Don't like your car, take someone else's; don't like your house, just take someone else's. The proposition that the only people who are crossing the border the most excellent of beings who just want to work is absurd.
Tell you what: I would be perfectly fine with a path to citizenship for anyone without serial convictions or a history of violence. I would insist that you actually contribute to the nation (not just to yourself or other Latinos) and knock off the arrogance that is so very pervasive with some groups of Hispanics. If you loathe our culture, happily all you need to do avoid it is not come here. See how easy that is? If you want to come here to be a productive citizen with an allegiance the United Sates, then come on! I you want to be Latino who can make some money in the US and not be bothered with the responsibilities that come with being here, then please stay home.

Give me a break, "we're not criminals".....hello, you're breaking the law, what do you call that ? The undertone of this article is poor, mistreated, abused mexicans...wake the fuck up people. Your liberal come one come all attitude is going to make this a third world country. I'm tired of paying for these "criminals" education, health care, insurance neglect, and not to mention, criminal activities. If people can't (or won't) operate through the legal channels, they don't deserve to be in this country. I say, post armed soldiers along the border, post signs in spanish (everything else is) that trespassers will be shot, and save the tax payers some money by shooting violators.

Give a six-month amnesty for illegal to leave the US peacefully with all of their cash and possessions. The six-month window should allow them enough time to wrap up their affairs. Any illegal caught after six month's will have all money and possessions confiscated and distributed between the local law enforcement agency that caught them and the federal government. The local law enforcement will have an incentive to pursue the illegal and the fed will receive money that is needed for the next step... building a wall on border land using federal land or land purchased from private citizens, and using tent prisons. Implement mandatory six-month hard labor sentences for anyone caught after the six months. Have a labor camp in each border state. The labor performed will be building a substantial rock wall along the border using materials found onsite and mobile cement plants. Repeat offenders receive a six-month addition to their previous jail sentence length. Problem solved, the illegal will learn there are consequences, provide a valuable service, and it is budget neutral. Problem solved!

John Seit - What if I would choose to ignore the laws against robbery, auto theft, burglary, fraud, and identify theft. I would then feel that it is my right to steal your car, break into your house to steal your computer, TV, credit cards and to withdraw money from your bank account. This is anarchy. Illegals say they aren't criminals but ignore and break our immigration laws every day. Is it racist to obey the laws of this country and to want others to do the same?

Do you support my idea and option to bring in 100 Million illegals who are non Spanish speaking people as from China, SE Aisa, Africa, etc. Don't you think the US can afford it or are you a racist against poor and equally needy people who speak neither English nor Spanish?

las96 10/26/2010 4:57:00 PM
Again, this is too easy for them. Even though it costs the taxpayers more and more, I would rather lock them all up for a long time than have them keep coming over and sucking up the resources we have. If they aren't going to be locked up, ensure that absolutely no state provides them with housing, fine the companies who hire them, and allow them and their anchor children no benefits, no food stamps, no medicaid, no TANF--absolutely nothing, after a while, they might get the picture, but then, they really aren't smart enough to get the picture.

From the article: "...a U.S. Border Patrol program that aims to hit all migrants entering the U.S. illegally with a criminal conviction."
Hello, McFly? Entering the U.S. illegally is a crime! All we are doing is enforcing the law. You are no more allowed to come to America without a visa than we are allowed to go to Mexico without a visa.
This isn't rocket science. You break the law, you pay the price.

How about printing an article about all the costs of illegal immigration? How about an article about local governments going bankrupt fro illegal immigration - see California? The illegals get free health care from the emergency rooms and US taxpayers have to foot the bill. Parkland once sent a bill to the Mexican consulate but of course it was ignored. The illegals get a free education for their kids, plus the cost of hiring biligual teachers because many of the kids don't speak english. Not to mention the anchor babies the illegals have in the US so these illegal kids are now US citizens and are "entiltled" to all the benefits of US citizens. Property taxes? I once lived in a one bedroom apartment and below me, 4 Mexicans (I believe were illegal) lived in another one bedroom apartment - until they were arrested for stealing from the construction site they were working at. The Observer never seems to get around to addressing these issues.

Q: Why is Mexico such a shit hole?
A: BECAUSE IT IS FULL OF MEXICANS.
-
Curious 10/25/2010 4:56:00 PM
No one who supports illegal immigration has ever answered this question, but it is hinted around in the article. Why do any illegals (thus crimimals by defintion) and their supporters, (yes allow legal immigrants to the legal extent permitted and they follow US law), feel they have the right to come to the US? You hear it is for work? We have over 10 million US citizens and legal immigrants unemployed currently i nthe US, i.e 9.6% plus unemployment). Would you then support bringing in 100 million people who speak Chinese, Arabic, Farzi, Hindi, or any one of the African continent languages or do you support only Spanish speaking illegals? If not the former for the 100 million, then who is the bigot? Fact is the US taxpayer can not support everyone who wants to come here. Worldwide there are many equally compelling hardship case hardship cases as faced in all countries south of the US Mexico border. That is why theUS has legal limits for immigrants.

Since they are criminals, a program like Operation Streamline may not be to their benefit. It put the Border patrol back to where it belongs, guarding the border. I don't really care what these Illegals want or care about, they shouldn't be here in the first place.

Well Mr. Lemmons, another piece of 'fine' journalism. Looks like it came from the LULAC propaganda handbook. I think you have lost your calling… you need to be writing for the San Francisco Chronicle. As for quick justice, just look at the waste of tax payer money on the Muslim Terrorist. Maybe we should speed up the judicial process on them. Or maybe enforce Iranian trespassing laws, call them spies. If they are armed, execute them as terrorists, else reopen Alcatraz and throw them in there for 30 years. Maybe even take a lesson from the French and open our own Devil’s Island Penal Colony. We are a country founded and defended by patriots under a common law. That law states the individuals in question in your expose’ a criminals, regardless of their intent. Get over the LULAC ‘love’ and write about rights of legal immigrants and citizens being disenfranchised by ‘criminials’!
-
Steve 10/23/2010 2:57:00 PM
Them being criminals..... it stops at the word "Illegal" when talking about Illegal Aliens. Being treated inhumane.... They were not abused and not violated. They were given food and shelter. Each one has the opportunity to enter a "plea". They enter the "plea" of guilty because they are guilty. Go through the process of entering the country the correct way (have they even started the process or just decide to enter the country the easy way….. if they have chosen the easy way…. Is that the kind of person that you would want working for you. If you had a job that needs to be done right but is harder…. Will they do it the right way or take shortcuts that will cost you in the long run). If they have family over here, "illegally”, find them and send them back as well. This is no different a crime as someone stealing or committing murder. It is breaking the law and if they get away with it, then it opens up leniency for greater crimes against the citizens of the United States of America. This is the greatest country there is (even the people that hate the U.S. come here to take advantage of what it has to offer) and it is getting destroyed by people such as the author of this article! I have a kind heart as well. But, they also let the drug cartel expand (because of it being lucrative and it served their essential purpose at the time) and now they have grown so large that they are uncontrollable. This is still……. Not the fault of the U.S. They have to make a stand for themselves to help improve themselves. Other countries have depended on this country to fight their battles far too long. It is time for the U.S. to worry solely on the U.S. and protect us. We have plenty of heart ache and sad stories that needs to be addressed as well. Put us first for a change and get back to being the country we all love!

Lesha Holland 10/22/2010 10:55:00 PM
None of you have picked up on what, to me, was the most damning tidbit: The Border Agents stopping Southbound shuttles and arresting people trying to go BACK to Mexico and points beyond! How is THAT justified, spending-wise?!!

-
Scott 10/21/2010 11:38:00 PM
So, you can print "f*ck" in your article but I can't type "sh!t-hole" in my comment? Interesting.
-
Scott 10/21/2010 11:31:00 PM
Brittnay, we know why they are trying to get here. It's because Mexico is a shit-hole run by drug cartels and corrupt politicians. They want to come here to get away from the inhumane way they are treated in their own country. However poorly they are treated by US Border Patrol, it's obviously not bad enough to prevent them from coming back for more, and more, and more. Evidently prison in the US is better than where they live now. The only thing the US could really do to "deter them without violating their human rights" is to fix their country for them - which would require an enormous amount of money and loss of American life. Personally, I wouldn't mind dividing Mexico up into 5 - 10 additional states and annexing them into the US. Then we can send the national guard down to stamp out the drug cartels and set up US businesses along their beautiful coast lines.
-
Jack Napper 10/21/2010 8:53:00 PM
I am a naturalized citizen of the US as well as a combat veteran of the US Army. So, since I KNOW that I have "certain unalienable rights" I wish to speak my mind:
FACT: NON US Citizens have NO rights under the constitution I took an oath to defend agains ALL enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC. They may have human rights, but they are NOT protected by OUR laws.
FACT: While conditions in the countries these people come from (by the way, Mexicans, it is NOT all about you) are deplorable, you ARE a criminal the moment you disobey American law. It doesn't matter what you say or how you feel, criminal.
FACT: Being poor doesn't mean that you can't fix your own country; England was rich, America was poor...but those men and women stood TOGETHER and WON! Stop using poverty and ignorance as an excuse for defying American law!
Apply for a visa, get your lottery number, and wait your turn...it was good enough for me, you are no better than me, and your problems are NOT America's fault!
-
Alfredo 10/21/2010 6:12:00 PM
This isn't journalism it is another piece of open borders and amnesty propaganda that might as well have been written by the above mentioned Isabel Garcia. For the record a pathway to citizenship is amnesty which we have tried once and failed.
-
Brittnay 10/21/2010 3:19:00 PM
I'm always shocked to read how intolerant and ignorant the people who respond are. I agree that illegal immigration is bad and we need to do something about it, but instead of calling them names and telling them to fix their own country, maybe we should try to understand why they try to get here in the first place and what we can do to deter them without violating their human rights. Not to mention, these programs obviously aren't working since every person interviewed said they were going to try to come back again. Everyone (no matter their status)has a right to a fair trial and there is nothing fair about these trials. Not to mention the other injustices of prosecuting people who could be very ill or mentally incapable of standing trial. But let's keep it up America, let's continue to deny rights to people solely because they weren't lucky enough to be born here.
-
Belinda 10/21/2010 3:18:00 PM
The only way to solve this issue is for a large majority of the American population to support a new law and an efficient way of dealing with illegal immigration. As long as the news media continues to publish sob storied like this, we are never going to solve this problem. Legal immigrants NEED TO TAKE A STAND like Frank said. We all need to make a stand. But as long as these kinds of stories continue to be published, we will never get the support we need to close this isue. We need stories published every day about how some illegal alien killed someone, robbed someone, or some committed some other violent crime. Publish stories about how much illegal aliens are costing the USA. Americans (unfortunately) let the midia tell them what to think. Except for a few million of us, most Americans do not think for themselves - sorry but it is true. We need to keep the pressure this issue and do something. Frank had a suggestion, I have a suggestion, and everyone can and I hope will do something to keep this fight going. What are you going to do????

Call, email, write a letter to your congressperson's and the white house telling them to stop screwing around and stop the criminals from crossing our borders, if you get a new congressperson in November, be sure and tell them too. If your sitting their thinking you can not have any effect, then you can't, but you doing this and telling your family and friends to do this too, because you have already sent yours. You Will Make Difference. Make a stand, don't be a wimp, we need to take our country back.
-
Frank Luska 10/21/2010 6:51:00 AM
Just another story of where do i start, lets start with a few quotes.
"Yeah, I will," he promises, before moving on with the rest. "I'm not a fucking criminal. I just want to work."
Clearly someone who does not give a shit about anybody or anything but himself. Is this the kind of people who deserve amnesty? If these people would spend as much time making their country a better place to live, than trying to run away from their problems, we would all be better off.
"Her husband and two children are in California. Emma came to tend to a sick sister in Mexico and hasn't been able to get back to her family for three years. She says she will keep trying."
Her husband and children can always go back to where they came from.
"We're not criminals," she says. "I don't feel like a criminal."
Lets see, you broke the law, got arrested, tried, convicted and deported. Seems like you are a criminal. I am sure their are murders, rapist, drug dealers who think their not criminals either.
Bring our military home, put them on the border to protect our country as they should be doing. Save millions and millions of dollars, who would try to cross the border if they knew they would be shot.
The time for stopping this crap has long passed, and it's not going to get any better with the pandering two parties we have now.
-
alex 10/21/2010 5:54:00 AM
If we do something against the law of a land it is a crime. why don't you apply for work visa and if you are not competent to get one why don't you stay where you are. Do not tell American you are not criminal, when you do something which is against the law it is a crime.
