I want you to ask yourself a deep, thought-provoking question. Were you scared when you saw The Grudge? How about The Ring? Now before you start dealing with these potential life-altering questions, take a deep breath and don't worry, because I'm not gonna ask if you saw the god-awful sequels to either of those films. But the point of the question is to make you realize that as contemporary Americans, our only insight into Japanese horror is warped through the big, digital screen. So to remedy this problem, go and check out the play Breath of Death at Teatro Dallas and see authentic Japanese ghost stories that would put Samara and that Grudge chick to shame. Drawing upon significant cultural notions like karma and the Japanese underworld, the theme of the play rests firmly in the morose and horrific. Shows run through November 7, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:15 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. For tickets, teatrodallas.org.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8:15 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Oct. 28. Continues through Nov. 7, 2010
