Allow us to make a half-baked, probably regrettable and inaccurate generalization: Musicians, artists and chefs don't get tattoos because they look cool, but because they smoke so much pot that their short-term memory is shot. All right, maybe that's not the case for all of them, but it would explain some of the skin-art choices we've seen lately, such as one dude's tatted commemorations to every state he's lived in, several people sporting baby-photo portraits of their children and still another guy, a guitarist, with the circle of fifths music reference diagram like some kind of cheat sheet on the wrist of his fretting hand. Maybe the idea was inspired by the protagonist of Christopher Nolan's Memento, in which Guy Pearce, playing a man whose short-term memory loss was caused by a brain injury rather than chronic smoking of the chronic, tries to figure out who killed his wife and ensures he doesn't lose his clues by having them etched forever into his flesh. Don't forget--the movie plays at midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre (5458 W. Lovers Lane) as part of the theater's Midnight Madness series.
