Every community movement needs a champion. While a number of bar owners, venue operators, and land owners have worked hard to overcome the challenges facing Deep Ellum over the past several years, few have had the impact that the Kettle Art Gallery has. The collaborative effort between property owner Don Cass and local artist Frank Campagna created a grass-roots movement many credit with helping to create the thriving arts community in the once blighted neighborhood. The work that the gallery does outside its walls--on the sides of buildings and the pillars of overpasses--has become Deep Ellum's hallmark. Kettle Art was a major catalyst for the mural art that reflects the local culture and creates a vibe that pulls the entire neighborhood together. And inside its doors, the gallery has really embraced its community roots, bringing artists and art appreciators alike back into an area many had given up on. Celebrate this immutable part of the Deep Ellum resurgence as the gallery marks an impressive anniversary with Five Years: A Brief History, an exhibit of works from Kettle contributors Cathey Miller, Mark Nelson, Misha Flores, Erica Felicella, Havi Frost and many more.
