The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen is the fairy tale that scared the hell out of me as a kid. A Snow Queen with a heart of ice holds a boy, Kai, captive until he can spell the word eternity with shards of ice. His friend Gerda saves him because love conquers all, but it's totally freaky. I mean, the queen keeps him as a pet by planting shards of ice in his eyes and heart. If the story alone isn't scary enough, the Dallas Children's Theater has upped the ante by having a puppet troupe perform it. (Shudders.) Still, if you've the chance to take some little person to the show, this story isn't counted as one of Andersen's best for nothing. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, with 11:30 a.m. weekday shows during its final week, December 21 to 23, at The Rosewood Center for Family Arts, 5938 Skillman St. Tickets are $14 to $25. Call 214-740-0051 or visit dct.org for tickets and more information.
