Carve Out Time for the Webb

Perhaps the first real impression you gather from Dan Phillips' drawings is that this guy loves curls. An artist with a flair for drawing freckled Betty Boop-like girls with curls up to here, and a graduate student from North Bennett Street School specializing in carving furniture in a way that's truly reminiscent of the hand-crafted precision that all but disappeared with colonial America, Phillips has a new exhibition of works, titled Early American, at the Webb Gallery in Waxahachie through February 6. For two months you can see the same drawings that convinced the Webbs to host Phillips at their gallery for self-taught artists, and get a feel for his woodworking as well. (Check out a short video on the gallery website's exhibition page and get a glimpse of the man at work with his carpentry.) For directions and gallery hours, visit webbartgallery.com.
Saturdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Dec. 5. Continues through Feb. 6, 2010
