Celluloid Bakers

Lemon meringue, rich, chocolate cream and powder filled puff pastries sit beautifully on display. Meticulously arranged like an artistic masterpiece, they cry out to the watering mouths of all those who dare stare at their ornate detail. The judging is about to commence. The competitors are frantic and scramble to finish the rest of their desserts with a last minute pinch of powdered sugar and a dash of vanilla and apple butter. Their brows are dripping with sweat and tears slowly form in their tired eyes. It all comes down to this one last moment. Their careers are on the line and the heat is on during one of France's most prestigious pastry competitions, the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (the Best Craftsman in France). Follow Jacquy Pfeiffer and 15 other prestigious pastry chefs as they battle for the coveted collar award in the 2009 documentary Kings of Pastry. A contest never tasted so good. The film is directed by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker and screens during at 6 and 8 p.m. Friday and noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St. Tickets are $8.50, $6.50 for Modern members.
