Beauty Isn't Always Obvious

The technical prowess and beauty in a representational work such as, say, the Sistine Chapel is apparent to millions. Even non-artists can recognize the artist's skill (or lack thereof) in a painting of a landscape, a human or an animal. But can abstract art reach the untutored heart in the same way? The cynical eye may see only blobs, lines and swirls of color, but a sympathetic viewer can perhaps have an even deeper experience with an abstract painting than a figurative painting. Abstract art is emotion distilled to pure motion and color, without the "baggage" of imagery. Explore the works of three abstract artists--Krista Harris, Raymond Saa and Winston Lee Mascarenhas--at Craighead Green Gallery, 1011 Dragon St., at the opening reception 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit runs through February 12. Call 214-855-0779 or visit craigheadgreen.com.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: Jan. 8. Continues through Feb. 12, 2011
