Happy New Year, Japan

By now, you've recovered from any New Year's Eve indiscretions and are ready for another holiday celebration. Unfortunately, the holiday calendar looks pretty bleak this time of year. Sure, there's MLK Jr. Day, which most people don't even have off, and expectation- and tension-ridden Valentine's Day, but we won't get another real celebration till March. Thanks to the Japanese-American Society of DFW, we can sneak in another New Year's celebration right here in January complete with mochitsuki (the making of rice cakes), taiko drumming, children's games, Japanese dancers and more. After the mochitsuki demonstrations, guests are invited to taste the cakes with a variety of toppings. Celebrate the new year Japanese-style from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Fujitsu Networks Communications, 2801 Telecom Parkway in Richardson. Cost is $8 for adults, $2 for children. Call 214-342-2022 or visit jasdfw.org.
Sun., Jan. 16, 2-5 p.m., 2011
