I'm a card carrying member of the Ed Ruscha fan club for a reason. Like several of his more popular pop art brethren, Ruscha can be all about the bright colors and recognizable icons (see: the well known Standard Stations paintings), but he's much more than that. Historically his work has run the gamut from definable pop art paintings to word drawings in gunpowder and honey to aerial photos of parking lots, but one subject that Ruscha will never tire of is driving and the great American road. Don't believe me? Then head over to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St.) for its newest exhibition, Ed Ruscha: Road Tested. Featuring 75 works produced over the course of several decades, Road Tested is an assemblage of paintings, photos, drawings, and even film (the rarely seen Miracle) that would make Jack Kerouac proud. Ed Ruscha: Road Tested is on display now through April 17 at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays (with extended hours Fridays). General admission is $10 with discounts available for students and seniors. Call 817-738-9215 or visit themodern.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 23. Continues through April 17, 2011
