Fitting that Sleep Whale, or at least some members of the experimental ambient instrumental band, would perform at the opening reception for Slow Cheetah at Plush Gallery. The three-artist show includes abstract resin figures created by C.J. Davis, formerly the label rep for Sleep Whale, back when they were known as Mom--and their intricate, soothing arrangements should make perfect background music for looking at the work of the other two artists, Brian Ryden's vivid frenzied paintings and Kat Ryals' tintype shots of models in makeshift animal costumes. Carlos Salas, owner of the great Cliff Notes bookstore, will read poetry and singer-songwriter Erin Machniak will also perform at the reception, which begins at 6 p.m. Saturday. The exhibition (free) will stay up through February 19 at Plush, 918 Dragon St., noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Call 214-915-0925 or visit plushgallery.com.
Sat., Jan. 22, 6 p.m.; Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Jan. 22. Continues through Feb. 19, 2011
