Annie Proulx has been on a roll since the 1993 release of her first novel, Postcards, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction. Her second novel, The Shipping News, earned Proulx the Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award, and her work--mostly short stories and novels--has continued to earn the author praise from critics and readers alike. But reaction has been mixed for her latest work, Bird Cloud. Why so? Well, the work is a bit of a departure for Proulx, as she hasn't published nonfiction in more than 20 years. Bird Cloud chronicles Proulx as she deals with all the things that can go wrong while trying to build a "dream home" on more than 600 acres of awe-inspiring Wyoming prairie. Proulx will be in town to discuss the book as a guest of Arts & Letters Live's 2011 Distinguished Writers Series, which features award-winning authors reading from and discussing their work, responding to questions and signing copies of their works. The event takes place 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Horchow Auditorium at the Dallas Museum of Art. Ticket prices are $37, or $15 for students, with special rates for DMA members, seniors and educators. For tickets and info, call 214-922-1818 or visit dallasmuseumofart.org.
