The Super Bowl Prostitute Myth: 100,000 Hookers Won't Be Showing Up in Dallas

The alarm bells reached peak decibel in November, when Dallas Police Sergeant Louis Felini told the The Dallas Morning News that between 50,000 and 100,000 prostitutes could descend on the metroplex for the Super Bowl. The call to outrage had sounded.

His estimate was astonishing. At the higher figure, it meant that every man, woman and child holding a ticket would have their own personal hooker, from the vice presidential wing of FedEx to Little Timmy from Green Bay.

And if you believed a study commissioned by the Dallas Women's Foundation, the hordes would include 38,000 underage prostitutes. Doe-eyed beauties from the Heartland would be peddled like Jell-O shots at the Delta Phi soiree.

Official Dallas would not be caught flat-footed. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and the FBI pledged extra manpower to fight "human trafficking." The Arlington Police Department put up billboards near Cowboys Stadium. They featured flashing photos of busted johns, warning visitors: We don't take kindly to perverts like you, son.

Even the Shapiro Law Firm leaped in. Noting that an estimated 40,000 hookers showed up in Dallas for the NBA All-Star game last year, it wanted to make sure that, should a hedge fund manager find himself ensnared in naked compromise, "our attorneys provide experienced defense for sex crimes, including the solicitation of a prostitute."

The city was gearing up for a massive invasion of skanks and sex fiends. It would be like Normandy, only with way more plastic surgery—the largest single gathering of freaks and pedophiles the world has ever seen. At least outside of a Vatican staff meeting.

But if Dallas is like any other Super Bowl—or Olympics or World Cup, for that matter—today's four-alarm panic will tinkle as softly as a servant's bell by next week. All evidence says that America's call girls will be at home, watching the game of TV, just like you and me.

Judging by Super Bowls past, the mass migration of teenage sex slaves is nothing more than myth.

Read between his very terse lines, and you can tell that Brian McCarthy isn't happy. He's a spokesman for the NFL. Every year he's forced to hear from mopes like yours truly, wondering why his customers are adulterers and child molesters.

The routine is the same in every Super Bowl city. The media beats the drum of impending invasion, warning that anywhere from 15,000 to 100,000 hookers will soon arrive. Politicians lather on their special sauce of manufactured outrage. Cops and prosecutors vow stings and beefed up manpower.

By implication, the NFL's wealthiest and most connected fans—captains of industry and senators from Utah—will be plotting a week of sexual rampage not seen since the Vikings sailed on Scotland. And they must be stopped.

"This is urban legend that is pure pulp fiction," the NFL's McCarthy says. "I would refer you to your local law enforcement officials."

So that's what we did. Meet police Sergeant Tommy Thompson of Phoenix, which hosted the 2008 Super Bowl. "We may have had certain precincts that were going gangbusters looking for prostitutes, but they were picking up your everyday street prostitutes," Thompson says of his vice cops. "They didn't notice any sort of glitch in the number of prostitution arrests leading up to the Super Bowl."

Conspicuously noted: He doesn't recall a single arrest of an underage girl.

Perhaps Phoenix was an anomaly. So let's go to Tampa, host of Super Bowl 2009. Police spokeswoman Andrea Davis says her department ran special operations on the sex trade. They came up empty. "We didn't see a huge influx in prostitutes coming into Tampa," she says. "The arrests were not a lot higher. They were almost the same."

Now it could be that both departments are incompetent, mistaking tens of thousands of women in fishnet stockings for a very large synchronized swimming team. So let's travel to Europe, where the hooker influx for the World Cup is routinely pegged at 40,000. If anyone's going to break the record for the world's largest orgy, it's the Godless Eurotrash, right?

Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup. U.S congressmen warned the promiscuous Krauts that fleshly opportunism would not be tolerated. So the government spent millions of euros to crush human trafficking. No one could say the Germans were perv enablers.

But apparently 39,995 of the blasphemers had carburetor trouble in Prague and never showed. The final Cup tally for forced prostitution arrests: 5. German brothels couldn't even report a surge in business. And a further study by the Swedish government ruled "the 40,000 estimate was unfounded and unrealistic."

There don't appear to be solid figures for last summer's South African Cup, but anecdotal evidence says the sex business was slow.

The only concrete numbers we have: Museums showed record attendance.

This isn't to say that the sex trade isn't alive and well. It is. Nor is it to imply there are no such thing as teen prostitutes. There are. The problem is that most of what we believe remains fixed in a blaxploitation film from 1973, where menacing pimps named Lester beat their weeping charges with diamond-encrusted canes.

Ask Maggie McNeill.

That's not her real name. It's the pen name she uses on her website, The Honest Courtesan, where she dispenses wisdom on all things hooker. She ran an escort service in New Orleans for six years, supplying ladies for the 2002 Super Bowl. As she sees it, almost all we believe about the industry is fallacy.

GAATW has just produced a new publication on this issue. Feel free to share/distribute. A new publication from the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW): http://www.gaatw.org/publications/WhatstheCostofaRumour.11.15.2011.pdf What's the Cost of a Rumour? A guide to sorting out the myths and the facts about sporting events and trafficking There has been a lot published on the supposed link between sporting events and trafficking, but how much of it is true and how much of it is useful? In this guide, we review the literature from past sporting events, and find that they do not cause increases in trafficking for prostitution. The guide takes a closer look at why this unsubstantiated idea still captures the imagination of politicians and some media, and offers stakeholders a more constructive approach to address trafficking beyond short-term events. We hope this guide will help stakeholders quickly correct misinformation about trafficking, develop evidence-based anti-trafficking responses, and learn what worked and what didn’t in past host cities.

There is a lot of controversy over the numbers of adult woman who are forced sex slaves. The real factual answer is that no one knows. There is hard evidence that the sex slavery/sex trafficking issue continues to report false information and is greatly exaggerated by politicians, the media, and aid groups, feminist and religious organizations that receive funds from the government, The estimate of adult women who become new sex slaves ranges anywhere from 40 million a year to 5,000 per year all of which appear to be much too high. They have no evidence to back up these numbers, and no one questions them about it. Their sources have no sources, and are made up numbers. In fact if some of these numbers are to believed which have either not changed or have been increased each year for the past twenty years, all woman on earth would currently be sex slaves. Yet, very few real forced against their will sex slaves have been found. It is not easy for criminals to engage in this activity: Sex trafficking is illegal and the penalties are very severe. It is very difficult to force someone to be a sex slave, they would have to have 24 hour guards posted and be watched 365 days a year, 24 hours per day. Have the threat of violence if they refused, and have no one notice and complain to the authorities or police. They would need to hide from the general public yet still manage to see customers from the general public and not have the customers turn the traffickers in to the police. They would need to provide them with medical care, food, shelter, and have all their basic needs met. They would need to have the sex slaves put on a fake front that they enjoyed what they were doing, act flirtatious and do their job well. They would have to deal with the authorities looking for the missing women, and hide any money they may make, since it comes from illegal activity. They must do all of this while constantly trying to prevent the sex slaves from escaping and reporting them to the police. They would need to prevent the general public from reporting them into the police. This is extremely difficult to do, which makes this activity rare. These criminals would be breaking dozens of major laws not just one. Kidnapping itself is a serious crime. There are many laws against sex trafficking, sex slavery, kidnapping, sex abuse, rape, sexual harassment etc. If someone is behind it, they will be breaking many serious laws, be in big trouble, and will go to jail for many long years. While there are some women who may be true victims. And it is possible for this to happen in rare situations. This is a small rare group of people and that the numbers and scale of this crime is exaggerated. The very nature of someone pulling off a kidnapping and forced sex for profit appears to be very difficult. Since it would be difficult this makes this crime rare. Not impossible, but extremely rare. And do you really think that millions of people are lining up to make a career out of being a illegal violent sex slave kidnapping pimp? A key point is that on the sidelines the adult prostitutes themselves are not being listened to. They oppose laws against prostitution. But no one wants to listen to the prostitutes themselves. Only to the self appointed experts that make up numbers and stories many of which have never met a real forced sex slave or if they did it was only a few. The media and government never ask the prostitutes themselves what would help them in terms of laws. Many women in the sex business are independent workers. They don’t have a pimp. They work for themselves, advertise themselves, and keep all the money for themselves. No one forces them, because there isn’t anyone to force them. They go out and find their own customers, set their own prices, and arrange everything by themselves. Sometimes they may employ others to help them, but these are not pimps. If for example, she hires an Internet web design company to make a website for her, does that make the web design company a pimp? If she pays a phone company for a phone to do business, does this make the phone company a pimp? If she puts an ad in the paper, does this make the editor a pimp? If she puts the money she makes into a bank account does this make the bank a pimp? A lot of anti prostitution groups would say yes. Everyone and everybody is a pimp. These groups make up lies, and false statistics that no one bothers to check. A big reason they do this is because it provides high paying jobs for them. They get big donations, and grants from the government, charity, churches, etc. to have these groups, and pay these high salaries of the anti prostitution workers. Adult Women are NOT children. Media coverage of trafficking and adult women's migration and sex work is confused and inaccurate. The media wrongly uses the terms 'sex work' and 'trafficking' and adult sex work and child sex trafficking synonymously, as if they were the same. perpetuating stereotypes and stigmatization, and contributing to the violation of women's right to free movement and livelihood options. They assume that if any woman moves from place to place for sex work that they are being trafficking. The media, politicians, aid groups, feminist, and religious organizations does not take into account that she may do this of her own free will. Too often women are treated like children. Prostitution is a business between adults and in our society adults are responsible for themselves. Sex slavery/trafficking on the other hand is non-consensual. To equate that the two are the same is to say grown adult women are not capable of being responsible or thinking for themselves. Adult women are not children. Most migrant women, including those in the sex industry, have made a clear decision, says a new study, to leave home and take their chances abroad. They are not "passive victims" in need of "saving" or sending back by western campaigners. Sex Trafficking/Slavery is used by many groups as a attempt to outlaw all prostitution around the world by saying that all women are victims even if they do it willing. This hurts any real victims because it labels all sex workers as victims. This is done by the media, aid groups, NGO’s, feminists, politicians, and religious organizations that receive funds from the government. There are very strong groups who promote that all adult women who have sex are victims even if they are willing, enjoy it and go out of there way to get it. These groups try to get the public to believe that no adult women in their right mind would ever go into the sex business unless she was forced to do so, weather she knew it or not. They say that 100% of all sex workers are trafficking victims. They do this in order to label all men as sex offenders and wipe out all consensual prostitution. Which is what their real goal is. There is almost no one who challenges or questions them about their false beliefs. Therefore, the only voices you hear are of these extreme groups. These groups want to label all men as terrible sex offenders for seeing a willing adult sex worker. No one stands up to say this is foolish, the passive public says nothing. These groups even say that all men who marry foreign women are terrible sex predators who take advantage of these "helpless foreign women wives". These groups believe that two adults having consensual sex in private should be outlawed. Since they believe that it is impossible for a man to have sex with a woman without abusing the woman in the process. Non government Organizations (NGO's) are chiefly responsible for manufacturing “a growing problem” of trafficking in order to generate revenue for their Federally funded cottage industry. They also fabricated numbers by expanding the definition of trafficking to include practically anyone. For example various women's groups testified under oath at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (July 13, 2007) that US based matchmaking organizations were correlated to human trafficking ring. womenspolicy.org/thesource/article.cfm?ArticleID=1442 This hysterical claim was an emotional ploy to get legislators to enact the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act. The truth reveals THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A US BASED MATCHMAKING AGENCY ARRESTED FOR TRAFFICKING. These NGO's spread their propaganda partnering with Lifetime television(Television for women) conducting a poll among viewers (mostly women) to asociate "mail order brides services" with trafficking of women to generate support for the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act. wqad.com/global/story.asp?s=3970595&ClientType=Print This romance law requires American men submit criminal hard copy records to be reviewed before they can communicate with a foreign lady using a matchmaking organization. wqad.com/global/story.asp?s=3970595&ClientType=Print Why should the US government dole out millions of dollars to NGO’s such as Polaris Project whose executives are paid handsome salaries when the money could be spent on REAL PROBLEMS? This is an example of feminists and other groups exploiting the suffering of a small minority of vulnerable and abused women in order to further their own collective interests. For example, getting money from the government and Charity into their organizations. Most who get recruited into the trade, have been severely traumatized and sexually abused as children, often by multiple perpetrators before they are broken down enough to be pimped out by people like "Maggie." QUOTE on the "bunny ranch": "Christina, who ended up at the ranch after 37 foster homes and was trying to put herself through nursing school, said working at the legal brothel seemed like a dream come true." http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=4495721&page=2 THAT'S NOT A NORMAL LIFE. I wonder if the Observer writer could imagine going through 37 foster homes? Really? Since you seem to be so keen on promoting prostitution. Most people do not go through 37 FOSTER HOMES. And do you know what 37 foster homes means? I'm sorry to say it but anyone who has worked the system, knows, that means the kid has been abused horrifically, in a good portion of those foster homes. And when you get to 37.....THIRTY SEVEN. Then how effed up is the system?? And if these are the happy hookers (people who have been been through hell without choices) you are trying to promote to the world, then your idea of ok, SUCKS. Just because someone goes through that hell (and guaranteed chance of sexual abuse, non-attachment, shifting points of so called protection, danger at every corner) at that point does not mean they deserve to be sexual pawns in your game. If that's what someone has to go through in order to make their body public, then it's not ok: http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=4495721&page=2

According to the media hype There was supposed to be hundreds of thousands of under age sex slaves kidnapped and forced to have sex with super bowl fans. At the Dallas Super Bowl 2011. WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL OF THEM???????????? Well, as predicted it was all a lie by the Dallas Women’s Foundation which is a anti-prostitution group that tells lies in order to get grant money from the government and charities to pay their high salaries. As proved in the link below: Top FBI agent in Dallas sees no evidence of expected spike in child sex trafficking http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/super-bowl/local/20110302-top-fbi-agent-in-dallas-praises-super-bowl-security-effort-sees-no-evidence-of-expected-spike-in-child-sex-trafficking.ece In recent years, every time there has been a major international sporting event, a group of government officials, campaigning feminists, pliant journalists and NGOs have claimed that the movement of thousands of men to strange foreign countries where there will be lots of alcohol and horniness will result in the enslavement of underage sex slaves for the purposes of sexual pleasure. Obviously. And every time they have simply doubled the made-up scare figures from the last international sporting event, to make it look like this problem of sport/sex/slavery gets worse year on year. Yet each year it is proved false. This myth of thousands or millions of underage sex slaves tries to make every sports fan a sex criminal. No matter what the sport is, or in what country it is in. Brian McCarthy isn't happy. He's a spokesman for the NFL. Every year he's forced to hear why his customers are adulterers and child molesters. Brian McCarthy says the sport/super bowl sex slave story is a urban legend, with no truth at all. I do not like the idea of people getting the wrong information and believing lies, no matter what the topic is. The Sex trafficking, slavery issue is one of the biggest lies being told today. It is amazing to me how people will believe such lies so easily. The media is to blame for this. I wonder why they feel such a need to report wrong stats, numbers and information about this topic without doing proper research. While this may happen in very rare limited situations, the media will say that millions of people are sex slaves without doing any real research on the topic. Only taking the word of special interest anti-prostitution groups which need to generate money in the form of huge government grants from taxpayers, and charities. These "non profit" group's employees make huge salaries, therefore they need to lobby the government, and inflate and invent victims in order to get more money into their organizations. If you look into how many real kidnapped forced against their will sex slaves there are, and not just take the anti-prostitution groups word for it. You will be very surprised. Where are all the forced sex slaves? I would like to meet the millions of slaves and see for myself if they were kidnapped and forced against their will. These groups lobby the government in a big way, getting Politicians to truly believe their lies. This is an attempt to over inflate an issue in order to get more government money to these organizations. As a tax payer, voter, and resident I don’t want the government to mislead me. ‎The Texas Attorney General released his "preliminary report" today. 113 arrests. How many were women? How many were pimps? We were told hundreds - even thousands - of girls were being shipped to Dallas. What happened to them? They arrested one pimp? Does that mean the other 112 were prostitutes? Was a multi-state, multi-disciplinary task force needed to arrest 112 prostitutes? Is this a higher amount than any other weekend in Dallas? Where did the one pimp who was arrested come from? Was he from Dallas, or one of the ones who was transporting the domestic victims in? Only one girl - who was arrested - identified herself as a victim. What is the fate of the others? If this is the preliminary report, when will the final be released? Lots of questions from this 'report.' Looks like the Human Trafficking Rescue Industry has egg on their face again. They continue to use victims to further their agenda, boost their egos in the media, and get as many donations as possible. Just like the pimps, they are using victims for financial gain. Shameful.

This is such a PATHETIC non-truth. Maggie, stop pimping, if you can. Can you find any humanity for those you SELL? You are an *Exploiter*. STOP trying to sell out the hard work of people who make minimum wage to help rape victims. And stop trying to convince people that they are "getting money". What a load of crap, crap, crap. My mom worked in social work with prostituted kids, I volunteered my bum off, unpaid for a decade, as most do. No one is "getting money" from this work. YOU ARE. YOU are selling human beings, YOU are pimping women who you don't care about. YOU are selling those girls who are rape and incest survivors. STOP LYING. I hate to say it but you have fallen, spiritually, ethically, and morally.

  • anonymous 02/16/2011 4:48:00 AM

I posted this before and "Maggie" wrote in a bunch of bs under false names to push it down the comment log, but again this is who "Maggie", the source for Pete's article is, this is what she is about. Maggie, I hope you find your soul soon and stop throwing abuse victims under the bus. Original note: A woman wrote in to Maggie's blog stating that she'd been through "systemic breaking, gang rape, and captivity" as had those around her in prostitution. (You can go to any shelter for prostituted people and here this. Because it happens all the time.) But what does Maggie do? Calls her names, calls her a "scam" and goes about an extended effort to discredit her story and claim that she's not legit. How is she an impartial or credible source? One of her comments about people she does not like arguing with her, "I have nothing, however, against caging up such creatures in the back yard and letting my guests look at them". Everyone can now put their heads in their hands. This article engages in the very thing it condemns. What are Maggie's academic research credentials? I'm genuinely asking, because I don't see any. She's a Madam and engages in rampant, childish, excessive name calling throughout her blog and seems very self referencing. She believes it therefor you are stupid if you don't think like her. It's obvious what her motivation is. There's plenty of solid source research from the US Dept of Justice though to show otherwise when she claims that trafficked kids and pimps are not out there in large numbers. The stats on the Super Bowl may have been off but using that to try to dismiss how many kids and adults really are abused and trafficked the rest of the time is wholly disturbing and dangerous. On her blog she calls anti-traffickers "fetishists", which just takes the whole thing to the sandbox and makes you want to put your head in your hands for days. This is just so very broken down. I don't know any anti-traffickers who have a fetish for it, I do know the idea of kids abused and sold breaks their hearts though to to point they feel compelled to act and it's noble of them. And the reality is most anti-traffickers know kids or adults (who were sold as kids) traumatized by trafficking and their motivation is coming from direct exposure to those real life people and the horrors they endured.

http://www.prostitutionresearch.com/factsheet.html The commercial sex industry includes street prostitution, massage brothels, escort services, outcall services, strip clubs, lapdancing, phone sex, adult and child pornography, video and internet pornography, and prostitution tourism. Most women who are in prostitution for longer than a few months drift among these various permutations of the commercial sex industry. All prostitution causes harm to women. Whether it is being sold by one’s family to a brothel, or whether it is being sexually abused in one’s family, running away from home, and then being pimped by one’s boyfriend, or whether one is in college and needs to pay for next semester’s tuition and one works at a strip club behind glass where men never actually touch you – all these forms of prostitution hurt the women in it. (Melissa Farley, paper presented at the 11th International Congress on Women’s Health Issues, University of California College of Nursing, San Francisco. 1-28-2000) "The everyday life of prostitution is distant from most of us. And here, our imagination is a poor assistant. Negotiate a price with a stranger. Agree. Pull down one pant leg. Come and take me. Finished. Next, please. It becomes too ugly to really take it in. The imagination screeches to a halt." (Cecilie Hoigard and Liv Finstad, Backstreets: Prostitution, Money, and Love, 1992, translated by Katherine Hanson, Nancy Sipe, and Barbara Wilson; first published as Bakgater in Norway, 1986, Pennsylvania State University Press, University Park, Pennsylvania). Men call up the image of the whore when they are abusing their partners. The accusations in between the kicks and slaps: "You slut....whore...." Historically, the words mean "subhuman," "having no rights," "invisible," and "wicked." As recently as 1991, police in a southern California community closed all rape reports made by prostitutes and addicts, placing them in a file stamped "NHI." The letters stand for the words "No Human Involved." (Linda Fairstein, Sexual Violence: Our War Against Rape, 1993, New York, William Morrow.) "[The prostitute] is a victim of every bad thing men do to women: physical and sexual abuse, economic oppression and abandonment." (Mick LaSalle, "Hollywood is hooked on hookers, " San Francisco Examiner, December 3, 1995). Women in prostitution are purchased for their appearance, including skin color and characteristics based on ethnic stereotyping. Throughout history, women have been enslaved and prostituted based on race and ethnicity, as well as gender (Kathleen Barry, 1995 ,The Prostitution of Sexuality, New York University Press). We usually don't see prostitution as domestic violence because it is just too painful: "...the carnage: the scale of it, the dailiness of it, the seeming inevitability of it; the torture, the rapes, the murders, the beatings, the despair, the hollowing out of the personality, the near extinguishment of hope commonly suffered by women in prostitution." (Margaret A. Baldwin "Split at the Root: Prostitution and Feminist Discourses of Law Reform" in Yale Journal of Law and Feminism, 1992, Vol 5: 47-120) "Male dominance means that the society creates a pool of prostitutes by any means necessary so that men have what men need to stay on top, to feel big, literally, metaphorically, in every way;..." (Andrea Dworkin, Prostitution and Male Supremacy, in Life and Death, Free Press, 1997). "Prostitution isn't like anything else. Rather, everything else is like prostitution because it is the model for women's condition." (Evelina Giobbe, 1992, quoted by Margaret Baldwin in "Split at the Root: Prostitution and Feminist Discourses of Law Reform," Yale Journal of Law and Feminism, 5: 47-120). "The sex industry markets precisely the violence, the practices of subordination that feminists seek to eliminate from the streets, workplaces, and bedrooms." Sheila Jeffreys, (1997) The Idea of Prostitution, Spinifex Press, North Melbourne, Victoria. The practice of prostitution is a practice of sexual objectification of women. "... every act of sexual objectifying occurs on a continuum of dehumanization that promises male sexual violence at its far end." John Stoltenberg (1990) Refusing to be a Man, Fontana, London. The average age of entry into prostitution is 13 years (M.H. Silbert and A.M. Pines, 1982, "Victimization of street prostitutes, Victimology: An International Journal, 7: 122-133) or 14 years (D.Kelly Weisberg, 1985, Children of the Night: A Study of Adolescent Prostitution, Lexington, Mass, Toronto). Most of these 13 or 14 year old girls were recruited or coerced into prostitution. Others were "traditional wives" without job skills who escaped from or were abandoned by abusive husbands and went into prostitution to support themselves and their children. (Denise Gamache and Evelina Giobbe, Prostitution: Oppression Disguised as Liberation, National Coalition against Domestic Violence, 1990) The age of entry into prostitution is decreasing. For example, how do we even conceptualize "juvenile" prostitution, when the age of consent for legal sexual activity is constantly lowered, as in Netherlands and Philippines? (Kathleen Mahoney, Professor of Law, Calgary University, Canada, 1995) * "Incest is boot camp [for prostitution.]" (Andrea Dworkin, "Prostitution and Male Supremacy," in Life and Death, Free press, 1997) Estimates of the prevalence of incest among prostitutes range from 65% to 90%. The Council for Prostitution Alternatives, Portland, Oregon Annual Report in 1991 stated that: 85% of prostitute/clients reported history of sexual abuse in childhood; 70% reported incest. The higher percentages (80%-90%) of reports of incest and childhood sexual assaults of prostitutes come from anecdotal reports and from clinicians working with prostitutes (interviews with Nevada psychologists cited by Patricia Murphy, Making the Connections: women, work, and abuse, 1993, Paul M. Deutsch Press, Orlando, Florida; see also Rita Belton, "Prostitution as Traumatic Reenactment," 1992, International Society for Traumatic Stress Annual Meeting, Los Angeles, CA M.H. Silbert and A.M. Pines, 1982, "Victimization of street prostitutes," Victimology: An International Journal, 7: 122-133; C. Bagley and L Young, 1987, "Juvenile Prostitution and child sexual abuse: a controlled study," Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health, Vol 6: 5-26. 80% of prostitution survivors at the WHISPER Oral History Project reported that their customers showed them pornography to illustrate the kinds of sexual activities in which they wanted to engage. 52% of the women stated that pornography played a significant role in teaching them what was expected of them as prostitutes. 30% reported that their pimps regularly exposed them to pornography in order to indoctrinate them into an acceptance of the practices depicted. (A facilitator's guide to Prostitution: a matter of violence against women, 1990, WHISPER - Women Hurt in Systems of Prostitution Engaged in Revolt Minneapolis, MN) The male sexuality in prostitution is "male masturbation in a female body." (Hanna Olsson, regarding a study of Swedish prostitution, quoted by Kathleen Barry in The Prostitution of Sexuality, 1995, New York, New York University Press) In prostitution, "men buy not a self but a body that performs as a self, and it is a self that conforms to the most harmful, damaging, racist and sexist concepts of women..." (Kathleen Barry, The Prostitution of Sexuality, 1995, New York, New York University Press) The prostitution market is driven by customer demand for sexual service. During WW II, the Japanese military forced from 100,000 to 200,000 Korean women into prostitution to service their military. (Kathleen Barry, The Prostitution of Sexuality, 1995, New York, New York University Press). In 1974, police estimated that there were 400,000 prostitutes in Thailand, procured primarily for the U.S. military on R & R from the Vietnam War. As of 1993, an unofficial estimate is that there are 2 million prostitutes in Thailand, whose national economy is dependent on tourism. Prostitution is the largest commodity for the 450,000 Thai men who purchase prostitutes daily as well as for a large percentage of the 5.4 million tourists a year who arrive in Thailand for "sex tours." (Kathleen Barry, The Prostitution of Sexuality, 1995, New York, New York University Press). A more accurate term for "sex tourism" is prostitution tourism. (Melissa Farley, 1997) 90% of prostituted women interviewed by WHISPER had pimps while in prostitution (Evelina Giobbe, 1987, WHISPER Oral History Project, Minneapolis, Minnesota). Pimps target girls or women who seem naive, lonely, homeless, and rebellious. At first, the attention and feigned affection from the pimp convinces her to "be his woman." Pimps ultimately keep prostituted women in virtual captivity by verbal abuse - making a woman feel that she is utterly worthless: a toilet, a piece of trash; and by physical coercion - beatings and the threat of torture. 80% to 95% of all prostitution is pimp-controlled. (Kathleen Barry, The Prostitution of Sexuality, 1995, New York, New York University Press) Describing the trauma of prostitution, and its consequences, one fourteen year old stated: "You feel like a piece of hamburger meat – all chopped up and barely holding together" (D. Kelly Weisberg, 1985, Children of the Night, Lexington Books, Toronto). The answer to the question "why do prostitutes stay with their pimps?" is the same as the answer to the question "why do battered women stay with their batterers?" (Melissa Farley, 1996) Humans bond emotionally to their abusers as a psychological strategy to survive under conditions of captivity. This has been described as the Stockholm syndrome (Dee Graham with Rawlings and Rigsby, Loving to Survive: Sexual Terror, Men's Violence, and Women's Lives, 1994, New York University Press, New York.) "About 80% of women in prostitution have been the victim of a rape. It's hard to talk about this because..the experience of prostitution is just like rape. Prostitutes are raped, on the average, eight to ten times per year. They are the most raped class of women in the history of our planet. " (Susan Kay Hunter and K.C. Reed, July, 1990 "Taking the side of bought and sold rape," speech at National Coalition against Sexual Assault, Washington, D.C. ) Other studies report 68% to 70% of women in prostitution being raped (M Silbert, "Compounding factors in the rape of street prostitutes," in A.W. Burgess, ed., Rape and Sexual Assault II, Garland Publishing, 1988; Melissa Farley and Howard Barkan, "Prostitution, Violence, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder," 1998, Women & Health. 78% of 55 women who sought help from the Council for Prostitution Alternatives in 1991 reported being raped an average of 16 times a year by pimps, and were raped 33 times a year by johns. (Susan Kay Hunter, Council for Prostitution Alternatives Annual Report, 1991, Portland, Oregon) 85% of prostitutes are raped by pimps. (Council on Prostitution Alternatives, Portland, 1994) Prostitution is an act of violence against women which is intrinsically traumatizing. In a study of 475 people in prostitution (including women, men, and the transgendered) from five countries (South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, USA, and Zambia): 62% reported having been raped in prostitution. 73% reported having experienced physical assault in prostitution. 72% were currently or formerly homeless. 92% stated that they wanted to escape prostitution immediately. (Melissa Farley, Isin Baral, Merab Kiremire, Ufuk Sezgin, "Prostitution in Five Countries: Violence and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" (1998) Feminism & Psychology 8 (4): 405-426 83% of prostitutes are victims of assault with a weapon. (National Coalition Against Sexual Assault) A Canadian Report on Prostitution and Pornography concluded that girls and women in prostitution have a mortality rate 40 times higher than the national average. ( Special Committee on Pornography and Prostitution, 1985, Pornography and Prostitution in Canada 350. Many of the health problems of women in prostitution are a direct result of violence. For example, several women had their ribs broken by the police in Istanbul, a woman in San Francisco broke her hips jumping out of a car when a john was attempting to kidnap her. Many women had their teeth knocked out by pimps and johns. (Melissa Farley, unpublished manuscript, 2000) One woman (in another study) said about her health: "I’ve had three broken arms, nose broken twice, [and] I’m partially deaf in one ear….I have a small fragment of a bone floating in my head that gives me migraines. I’ve had a fractured skull. My legs ain’t worth shit no more; my toes have been broken. My feet, bottom of my feet, have been burned; they've been whopped with a hot iron and clothes hanger… the hair on my pussy had been burned off at one time…I have scars. I’ve been cut with a knife, beat with guns, two by fours. There hasn’t been a place on my body that hasn’t been bruised somehow, some way, some big, some small." (Giobbe, E. (1992) Juvenile Prostitution: Profile of Recruitment in Ann W. Burgess (ed.) Child Trauma: Issues & Research. Garland Publishing Inc, New York, page 126). In one study, 75% of women in escort prostitution had attempted suicide. Prostituted women comprised 15% of all completed suicides reported by hospitals. (Letter from Susan Kay Hunter, Council for Prostitution Alternatives, Jan 6, 1993, cited by Phyllis Chesler in "A Woman's Right to Self-Defense: the case of Aileen Carol Wuornos," in Patriarchy: Notes of an Expert Witness, 1994, Common Courage Press, Monroe, Maine. Like combat veterans, women in prostitution suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a psychological reaction to extreme physical and emotional trauma. Symptoms are acute anxiety, depression, insomnia, irritability, flashbacks, emotional numbing, and being in a state of emotional and physical hyperalertness. 67% of those in prostitution from five countries met criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD – a rate similar to that of battered women, rape victims, and state-sponsored torture survivors. (Melissa Farley, Isin Baral, Merab Kiremire, Ufuk Sezgin, "Prostitution in Five Countries: Violence and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" (1998) Feminism & Psychology 8 (4): 405-426 "For a great part of 1992 I lived in a beautiful apartment on Capitol Hill. I drove my expensive car. I bought lovely clothes and traveled extensively out of the country. For the first time in my 20 years as an adult woman, I paid my own way. There was no need to worry about affording my rent, my phone bill, all the debts one accumulates simply by living month to month. I felt invincible. And I was miserable to the core. I hated myself because I hated my life All the things I came to possess meant nothing. I could not face myself in the mirror. Working in prostitution lost my soul." Survivor interviewed by Debra Boyer, Lynn Chapman and Brent Marshall in Survival Sex in King County: Helping Women Out (1993), King County Women;s Advisory Board, Northwest Resource Associates, Seattle. "[In the past, we had a women's] movement which understood that the choice to be beaten by one man for economic survival was not a real choice, despite the appearance of consent a marriage contract might provide. ...Yet now we are supposed to believe, in the name of feminism, that the choice to be fucked by hundreds of men for economic survival must be affirmed as a real choice, and if the woman signs a model release there is no coercion there." (Catharine A. MacKinnon, "Liberalism and the Death of Feminism," in Dorchen Leidholdt and Janice Raymond (eds), The Sexual Liberals and the Attack on Feminism, 1990, Teachers College Press, New York.) 67% of 475 people in prostitution from South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, USA, and Zambia met diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 92% stated that they wanted to leave prostitution, and said that what they needed was: a home or safe place (73%); job training (70%); and health care (59%). (Melissa Farley, Isin Baral, Merab Kiremire, Ufuk Sezgin, "Prostitution in Five Countries: Violence and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" (1998) Feminism & Psychology 8 (4): 405-426 Other studies have noted that those in prostitution want to escape, and have the same needs as others who are in similar circumstances. El Bassel found that women who used drugs and who also prostituted were significantly more psychologically distressed than were drug-using women who did not prostitute. El Bassel et al. (1997) "Sex Trading and Psychological Distress among Women Recruited from the Streets of Harlem," American Journal of Public Health, 87: 66-70. In order to understand the trauma of prostitution, it is necessary to also understand the ways in which racism and sexism are inextricably connected in prostitution (see Vednita Carter,1993, "Prostitution: Where Racism and Sexism Intersect," Michigan Journal of Gender & Law, 1: 81-89. Also see Jackie Lynne (1998) "Street Prostitution as Sexual Exploitation in First Nations Women’s Lives." Essay submitted in partial fulfillment of Master of Social Work, University of British Colombia, Vancouver, B.C., April 1998. See a short version of Lynne’s thesis "Colonialism and the Prostitution of First Nations Women in Canada" on the Prostitution Research & Education web site There are few if any programs which address the needs of children of prostitutes. In a recent study of 1,963 prostitutes, more than two-thirds had at least one child. The average number of children was 2. 40% of the children lived with their grandmothers, but 20% lived with a mother working as a prostitute. 9% of the children were in foster care. 5% of the working prostitutes were pregnant when interviewed. (Adele Weiner, "Understanding the Social Needs of Streetwalking Prostitutes," 1996, Social Work, 41: 97-106.) In 1994, women in the sex industry were identified as one of three populations most in need of specialized services, primarily as a result of the violence inflicted upon them as a result of their work. (City of Seattle Dept of Housing and Human Service, Domestic Violence Community Advocacy Program Expansion, Feb. 1994) In prostitution, demand creates supply. Because men want to buy sex, prostitution is assumed to be inevitable, therefore 'normal.' Here are quotes from three different johns: "It’s like going to have your car done, you tell them what you want done, they don’t ask, you tell them you want so and so done…" (McKeganey, N. and Barnard, M. ,1996, Sex Work on the Streets: Prostitutes and Their Clients. Milton Keynes Open University Press, Buckingham, Scotland.). I am a firm believer that all women… are prostitutes at one time or another" (Hite, S. ,1981, The Hite Report on Male Sexuality. New York, Alfred A. Knopf) Discussing his experience in a strip club, one man said, "This is the part of me that can still go hunting" (Frank, K. (1999) Intimate Labors: Masculinity, Consumption, and Authenticity in Five Gentlemen’s Clubs, Unpublished doctoral dissertation, Duke University, Durham, N.C.). Violent behaviors against women have been associated with attitudes which promote men’s beliefs that they are entitled to sexual access to women, that they are superior to women, and that they are licensed as sexual aggressors. ( White,J.W. & Koss, M.P 1993, "Adolescent sexual aggression within heterosexual relationships: prevalence, characteristics, and causes. " In H.E. Barbaree, W.L. Marshall and D. R. Laws.(eds.) The Juvenile Sex Offender, Guilford Press, New York. In 1993, 42% of women arrested in Seattle on prostitution-related charges were convicted. In 1993, 8% of men arrested in Seattle on prostitution-related charges were convicted. (Seattle Women's Commission, 1995, "Project to Address the Legal, Political, and Service Barriers Facing Women in the Sex Industry" Seattle, Washington. If we view prostitution as violence against women, it makes no sense to legalize or decriminalize prostitution. The primary violence in prostitution is not "social stigma" as some maintain. Decriminalizing or legalizing prostitution would normalize and regulate practices which are human rights violations, and which in any other context would be legally actionable (sexual harassment, physical assault, rape, captivity, economic coercion.) or emotionally damaging (verbal abuse). (Melissa Farley) In 1999, the Swedish Parliament put into effect a law which criminalizes the buying of sexual services but not the selling of sexual services. This is a compassionate, social interventionist legal response to the cruelty of prostitution. (see,Sven-Axel Mansson and Ulla-Carin Hedin, 1999, "Breaking the Matthew Effect - On Women Leaving Prostitution," International Journal of Social Work. Again, Maggie, who is disguising herself as "Jeff", this is SO heinous and grotesque. You have pretty much proven that Mr. Kotz came to a total sociopath to get his research and he's given a sociopath and pulpit to stand at, but you are SICK. You go out of your way, over and over and over to deny the rape and abuse in this industry. Because you are not "Jeff", you are "Maggie" the Madam who is really a PIMP. You don't want anyone to believe there are victims because then you could not CASH IN. You are SICK. You make money from rape and incest victims. That's how people get into prostitution and you don't want people to know it, because you cashed in. You are raping people after the rapes. SICK. Shame on the Observer for giving "Maggie" a forum. http://www.prostitutionresearch.com/factsheet.html

Since "Maggie" keeps writing in as "Jeff" and "Hunk" and other attempts to make her Madam self come off as a man, and as a madam, she is obsessed with still selling human beings, here's what "Maggie" won't tell you.... And Maggie - the lady doth protesteth TOO much. You are trying SO hard to convince everyone the there's the "happy hooker" because you cashed in - and likely are repressing massive personal trauma, but all those incest and rape victims you cashed in on still deserve protection. So what "Maggie"/"Jeff"/"Hunk" won't deal with because they don't have the soul to deal with soul yet.... http://www.missingkids.com/missingkids/servlet/PageServlet?LanguageCountry=en_US&PageId=1494 Domestic Sex Trafficking of Minors Although comprehensive research to document the number of children engaged in prostitution in the United States is lacking, it is estimated that about 293,000 American youth are currently at risk of becoming victims of commercial sexual exploitation. Richard J. Estes and Neil Alan Weiner, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in the U.S, Canada and Mexico, University of Pennsylvania, Executive Summary at 11-12 (2001). The majority of American victims of commercial sexual exploitation tend to be runaway or thrown away youth who live on the streets who become victims of prostitution. Id. at 11-12. These children generally come from homes where they have been abused, or from families that have abandoned them, Richard J. Estes and Neil Alan Weiner, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in the U.S, Canada and Mexico, University of Pennsylvania, at 3 (2001) [hereinafter Estes Report], and often become involved in prostitution as a way to support themselves financially or to get the things they want or need. Id. Other young people are recruited into prostitution through forced abduction, pressure from parents, or through deceptive agreements between parents and traffickers. Francis T. Miko & Grace Park, Trafficking in Women and Children: The U.S. and International Response, at 7 (Updated July 10, 2003), at http://www.usembassy.it/pdf/other/RL30545.pdf. Once these children become involved in prostitution they are often forced to travel far from their homes and as a result are isolated from their friends and family. Id. Few children in this situation are able to develop new relationships with peers or adults other than the person who is victimizing them. Id. The lifestyle of such children revolves around violence, forced drug use and constant threats. Id. Among children and teens living on the streets in the United States, involvement in commercial sex activity is a problem of epidemic proportion. Approximately 55% of street girls engage in formal prostitution. Estes Report, Executive Summary at 7. Of the girls engaged in formal prostitution, about 75% worked for a pimp. Id. Pimp-controlled commercial sexual exploitation of children is linked to escort and massage services, private dancing, drinking and photographic clubs, major sporting and recreational events, major cultural events, conventions, and tourist destinations. Id. About one-fifth of these children become entangled in nationally organized crime networks and are trafficked nationally. Id. at 8. They are transported around the United States by a variety of means – cars, buses, vans, trucks or planes, Id., and are often provided counterfeit identification to use in the event of arrest. Id. The average age at which girls first become victims of prostitution is 12-14. Estes Report at 92. It is not only the girls on the streets that are affected -- for boys and transgender youth, the average age of entry into prostitution is 11-13. Id.

Nice try "Jeff"......Again this is Maggie, the pimp/madam talking. She can call herself "Jeff" or "Hunk" or whatever, but it's Maggie - who does not want anyone to know that most people who work in prostitution were raped as kids, and if they they were not they never would be in prostitution. She's full of crap and the lady doth protesteth too much. She made money off of selling girls and she apparently still needs to.

There needs to be a distinct separation of 1. Child sex trafficking 2. Adult sex Trafficking 3. Adult consensual prostitution. 4. Sex Slavery They are not the same. Adult Women are NOT children. Media coverage of trafficking and adult women's migration and sex work is confused and inaccurate. The media wrongly uses the terms 'sex work' and 'trafficking' and adult sex work and child sex trafficking synonymously, perpetuating stereotypes and stigmatization, and contributing to the violation of women's right to free movement and livelihood options. They assume that if any woman moves from place to place for sex work that they are being trafficking. The media, politicians, aid groups, feminist, and religious organizations does not take into account that she may do this of her own free will. Too often women are treated like children. These groups even say that all men who marry foreign women are terrible sex predators who take advange of these "helpless foreign women wives". These groups believe that two adults having consensual sex in private should be outlawed. Since they believe that it is impossible for a man to have sex with a woman without abusing the woman in the process. This is an example of feminists and other groups exploiting the suffering of a small minority of vulnerable and abused women in order to further their own collective interests. For example, getting money from the government and Charity into their organizations. Rather than wanting to find the truth.

Millions of USA government dollars are being spent to fight a crime that is extremely rare. The US government assumes that all prostitutes on Earth are sex trafficked slaves. Forced into it against their will. This is NOT true of MOST women. I have included in my post some very important links and information about this, that you should read. It is important to let the truth be told. The lying people get all the press. It is time for the people who tell the truth to get the press. The numbers of sex trafficking sex slaves: There is a lot of controversy over the numbers of adult woman who are forced sex slaves. “If media reports on sex trafficking in Nepal are to be believed, there would be no young girls left in Nepal at this time” It is not easy for criminals to engage in this acitvity: Sex trafficking is illegal and the pentities are very severe. It is very difficult to force someone to be a sex slave, they would have to have 24 hour guards posted and be watched 365 days a year, 24 hours per day. Have the threat of violence if they refused, and have no one notice and complain to the authorities or police. They would need to hide from the general public yet still manage to see customers from the general public. A key point is that on the sidelines the prostitutes themselves are not being listened to. They say this because these group are not rational, and cannot think in a logical way. Instead they make up lies, and false statistics that no one bothers to check. A big reason they do this is because it provides high paying jobs for them. They get big donations, and grants from the government, charity, churches, etc. to have these groups, and pay these workers. The Sex Trafficking/Slavery idea is used to outlaw all prostitution around the world by saying that all women are victims even if they do it willing. This hurts any real victims because it labels all sex workers as victims. Everything I heard about this problem was Americans complaining about it, but I never heard from the so-called victims themselves complaining about it. Why is that? Many of the self appointed experts complaining about this have never even met or seen a real forced against their will victim. The problems I see with the sex traffic idea is that suppose some of the women were not forced into this type of prostitution, but were willing and wanted to do this type of work, and went out of their way to do this type of work. (It is a lot of fast easy money, they don’t need a degree, or a green card.) All they have to do is lie and say that someone forced them into it. When perhaps, no one did. If a illegal allien for example is the victim all they have to do is lie and here are their benefits based on the USA anti-traffic prostitution laws: 1. They don’t have to go to jail or be arrested. 2. They get to stay and live in America, and become U.S. citizens 3. The U.S. Government will provide them with housing, food, education and will cater to them since they will be considered victims. . They will be considered victimed refugees, and can become American citizens. The way I see it is that this USA government system will encourage people to lie in order to receive all the benefits listed above. While there are some women who may be true victims. This is a small rare group of people. What hard evidence does the police have that these women were forced slaves? Were all the women that the police saw in fact slaves? Did the police prove without a doubt due to hard concrete evidence that the women were victims of being slaves and forced against their will? Did they account for all the benefits they would receive if they lied? I find it very hard to believe that most women in this business are forced against their will to do it. It would just be too difficult. There may be some exceptions but, I believe this is an attempt to over inflate an issue in order to get more government money to these organizations. As a tax payer, voter, and resident I don’t want the government to mislead me.

I want to thank you for your article about the "Super bowl Prostitutes Myth" This myth tries to make every sports fan a sex criminal. No matter what the sport is, or in what country it is in. These anti-prostitution groups need to in invent a victim that does not exist in order to get press attention. For example: == World Cup 2006 == Politicians, religious and aid groups, still repeat the media story that 40,000 prostitutes were trafficked into Germany for the 2006 world cup – long after leaked police documents revealed there was no truth at all in the tale. A baseless claim of 25,000 trafficking victims is still being quoted, recently, for example, by the Salvation Army in written evidence to the home affairs select committee, in which they added: "Other studies done by media have suggested much higher numbers.” Which has been proven by the German police to be completely false. Yet people still talk about these false numbers as if it were fact. ==World Cup 2010 == Again using the made up number of 40,000 prostitutes trafficked: The behavior of fans in South Africa has run contrary to what was predicted prior to the start of the tournament after David Bayever told World Cup organizers in March it was feared that up to 40,000 extra prostitutes could converge in the host nation to meet the expected demand. Bayever, deputy chairperson of South Africa's Central Drug Authority (CDA) that advises on drug abuse but also works with prostitutes, warned: "Forty-thousand new prostitutes. As if we do not have enough people of our own, we have to import them to ensure our visitors are entertained." But the tournament in 2010, if anything, has seen the modern-day soccer fan attracted to art galleries and museums over brothels. A trend that has seen a drop in revenue across the board for the prostitution industry, which is illegal in South Africa. "Zobwa," the chairperson of Sisonke -- an action group representing around 70 street prostitutes in Johannesburg -- said business had been down over the last month. "The World Cup has been devastating. We thought it was going to be a cash cow but it's chased a lot of the business away. It's been the worst month in my company's history," the owner and founder of one of Johannesburg's most exclusive escort companies told CNN. In recent years, every time there has been a major international sporting event, a group of government officials, campaigning feminists, pliant journalists and NGOs have claimed that the movement of thousands of men to strange foreign countries where there will be lots of alcohol and horniness will result in the enslavement of women for the purposes of sexual pleasure. Obviously. And every time they have simply doubled the made-up scare figures from the last international sporting event, to make it look like this problem of sport/sex/slavery gets worse year on year. Yet each year it is proved false.

  • Maggie McNeill 02/14/2011 2:00:00 PM

The woman who made that claim also made a host of accusations which those of us in the sex industry know to be untrue, which cast doubt on her whole story. True trafficking victims are so rare in the US that in all the years I've been involved in either work or activism I've only met one; her name is Jill Brenneman and she commented extensively on the article to which you refer: Her opinion, which anyone can read, is that the woman who wrote in MAY have been a real victim who was brainwashed by the anti-trafficking fanatics into "re-framing her experiences", which is there term for burying her real story under a mountain of lies. Jill's story is compelling and I recently conducted a long interview with her which will appear in my column in four parts next week, from the 21st-24th. Here's a quote from that interview: "But ultimately my anger is at abolitionists who fight so hard to keep prostitution criminalized. Criminalization denied me any hope of justice and protected a rapist from prosecution just as it had when I was a runaway teen. Their criminalization efforts and their faux rescue ideology is as much a reason for the rape as the rapist himself; criminalization gave him a blank check to do what he wanted to. It reminded me just how easy it was for a client to reset the clock and turn me back into a slave captive to his violence, with the alleged rescue/feminist abolitionist movement cheering the whole process as saving innocents." You want to hear what a REAL trafficking victim went through and how she feels about "rescue" organizations? Read the column.

  • anonymous 02/13/2011 11:33:00 PM

This has gotta be Maggie again, she's using the same ridiculous comments she does on her blog. Lots of 2 cent big words of denial. Actually a lot of the anti-traffickers are men, many are faith groups, tons are just normal people who don't want to see anyone abused.

  • anonymous 02/13/2011 11:29:00 PM

A woman wrote in to Maggie's blog stating that she'd been through "systemic breaking, gang rape, and captivity" as had those around her in prostitution.

  • anonymous 02/13/2011 11:24:00 PM

You might want to actually read the article that sources its research to the blog that Maggie runs. The article only mocks the issue and treats it with derision and tries to use trafficking for laughs. The blog by Maggie that Pete endorsed, is indeed flat out denial of victims, flat out denial of the overall problem of trafficking and every time someone tried to make a valid point about child trafficking, Maggie went back and debated them. And this whole article pulled out a lot of people doing so. This is another half evaluation of things. You are not reading any more than you are telling others to.

  • Henry K 02/13/2011 5:01:00 AM

so, uh, Bud Light...supports... prostitution? i don't quite follow the logic here i understand that you're up in arms over issues that you're passionate about... but i think this guy was just trying to shed light on a general misconception that people have. so instead of berating someone who is actually payed to be a jounalist- i'm blatantly assuming that you aren't- offer points to the contrary and cultivate a healthy and/or enlightening conversation about this subject. just stop hucking easy white-power slander at this guy because it makes you seem just as disconnected. Henry K out

  • anonymous 02/11/2011 11:53:00 AM

MEN: KEEP YOUR FILTHY PETERS IN YOUR PANTS AND WE WON'T HAVE THESE CONVERSATIONS. THEY ARE FUTILE MEN ARE EASY, LOOSE, AND IMMORAL, IN GENERAL. PERVS. JUST SAY NO, YOU ARE ALL SO WEAK

  • hunk 02/10/2011 11:31:00 PM

The reason these feminists are so upset about men having sex is that the feminists (the very few heterosexual ones that is) can't get a man to have sex with them even if they pay the man. I mean have you ever seen some of these misandrist (that means male-hating although you won't find it in a dictionary) feminists? Yuck!

  • Seriously? 02/10/2011 8:22:00 PM

Geez, Were you drunk when you wrote this, talk about some serious rambling. Twittyswister (whose name offends you for some unnamed reason) and Kotz points are that the prostitution problem and the child slavery problem were greatly exaggerated with regards to NORTH TEXAS FOR SUPERBOWL XLV. With the millions of dollars spent to boost the police presence, immigration enforcement, FBI presence, local volunteer groups, anti-prostitution advertisements and PSA's, the total prostitution arrests totaled in the single digits. Maybe it was the bad weather. Judging previous super bowls, whose host cities' police forces admitted didn't cause significant spikes in prostitution, I doubt it was the weather. No one here is saying that prostitution and sexual slavery doesn't exist and is not a big huge problem around the world. It just isn't a big huge problem with regards to the Superbowl. You really missed the boat, getting off topic talking about global problems when this article is about THE FREAKING SUPERBOWL!!! This most ironic part of this situation is that so much money, resources, time and manpower were poured to prevent Superbowl prostitution that many areas actually NEEDING these resources (like the ones you mention) most likely suffered. Not to mention the problem caused by police departments continually "crying wolf" with exaggerated reports. No one (Kotz, Twittyswitter) ever claimed "ill-will" from the police chief, they just criticized his perspective and his judgment. Wow, you were so angry and outraged by the article that you forgot how to read, or think intelligently for that matter. Claiming that a Dallas police report on super bowl prostitution is greatly exaggerated = denying the holocaust. Really? You're the one who needs to grow up YB, you're obviously 12.

  • yb 02/10/2011 6:05:00 AM

Uh, moron/sociopath who does not care about abused kids - it's not just a youtube link - it's a documentary produced by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, that happened to have a trailer link on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utjtLRqQuJI If you are too stupid to get past the youtube part, here's the link to the doc site (for your pea brain to get around): http://www.playgroundproject.com/film/ You probably did not check that link, like you did not check that it included people from Foster Care services, the Center for Missing and Exploited Kids....You don't seem to give a flying rats ass about abused kids though because you have the morals of a sociopath, so big shocker that you'll go to any length to discredit the issue.....I feel sorry for you - those abused kids have to get over what happened to them, but you have to live with the fact that you are helping them be abused. That's the sickest shit ever and you have to live that down....You are sad and pathetic. You, Maggie and Pete.

  • yb 02/10/2011 5:48:00 AM

Exactly Horatio and thanks for your comment - all you have to do is look around at what's supporting the Observer - they are paid for by prostitution - so of course there's no actual "journalism" available. This article is prostitution, because they are paid for by prostitution and they can not be trusted for sound research. They have an agenda to defend their financing, as corrupt as that may be, and no matter who that hurts.

  • nice try 02/10/2011 5:36:00 AM

You are such an IDIOT - it's not on youtube MORON - it's the FBI, the Dept of Justice, the Center for Missing and Exploited Kids. You are a LOSER, you're just a loser. Congrats - you are the modern day equivalent of slave traders back in the day. You'll be looked on with horror and disdain in history. But the Observer is just a giant Porn Mag now so you all want to believe that rape victims like prostitution and they'd never be in prostitution had they not been raped as kids. Y'all suck.

  • yb 02/10/2011 5:25:00 AM

You know moron - look at what you called yourself and try to have ANY credibility AT ALL. You sound like an idiot with your title alone. Twittyswister??? Really? GROW UP. The fact is - 100,000 kids get sold into trafficking yearly in the US and people are not exaggerating stats to be assholes - they got it wrong ON ACCIDENT. I don't know why but I know it was not with ill will - I do FLAT OUT know, some of them were raped and trafficked as kids, and many know those who were raped and trafficked as kids and they were trying to save anyone else from it. So when people said that there would be a spike in the issue around the super bowl, they were GENUINELY concerned for rape victims. Not ill willed, genuinely wanting to stop rape. You insensitive CREEPS. The reality is - those 100,000 kids are still getting raped, beaten and tortured ALL YEAR. And if ONE day a year, people over thought the stats - that might mean one day a year more people are looking to help those 100,000 kids that need help. What about the other 364 days a year that those 100,000 kids keep getting raped and abused? Why are you not freaking out about THAT rather than the one day a year, people actually tried to help? What the fuck are your priorities? Where's your outrage on the REAL issue that MOST of the year rape victims are not helped? You are sick creep - Twittyswister? GROW UP creep. GROW UP. GROW UP. This was not something meant in cruelty, though I think you, Maggie and Pete could find your soul and conscience somewhere along the way to get to human. You are not right now. There's plenty of PROOF that these kids are abused but you creeps will deny it like holocaust deniers and slavery deniers, because you want kids to be abused because you are SICK. You're pathetic and SICK. There's plenty of proof - though you guys have an MO that's obviously based on the Observer being bought and paid for by PORN. You can't sell this magazine without all the trafficked women in the back of it - pages and pages, and the girls in the strip clubs that were all raped as kids...... Pete Kotz - seriously - spend some more realistic time talking to people in the skin trade and if you had any real journalistic chops you'd get to the stories of the managers at strip clubs who tell you 95% of the girls were raped as kids. I don't think you have the integrity to get those stories - because you've gone too cold hearted like Maggie who gets raped, prostituted girls writing to her and she dismisses them to the curb with sick abandon. You guys are SICK. SICK. SICK. You need to find your humanity. And your "research" (Maggie) is not academic, she's self serving, inhumane, cold hearted, dismissive of abuse victims (jeez, read her blog - she's wicked to abuse victims in her attempts to glorify for pay prostitution that she's been financed by) and personally motivated, and not any better than the exaggerated stats you are supposedly calling out. FIND YOUR HUMANITY. You don't seem to have any now. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/civilrights/human_trafficking http://www.humantrafficking.org/countries/united_states_of_america http://abcnews.go.com/US/domestic-sex-trafficking-increasing-united-states/story?id=10557194 And for the record - creepy idiots who will deny the reality even when there's academic and humane research on topic - we all see you just like Holocaust deniers and the people who kept Slavery going when many knew it was evil. And to the TOTAL idiot who claimed people are making salaries from this stuff - holy shit - that's like saying volunteer fireman run into fires for personal gain. These people make NOTHING - their salaries are crap and they do this because they know rape victims and they don't want anyone else raped. Freaking morons. Nice try, but how freaking PATHETIC. The lengths that rapists will go to...... Keeping evil going, makes you evil. You have the choice and obviously "Twittyswister" (again grow up, for the love of humanity) and so many others - you are showing you will go down in history, with Maggie and Pete - like Holocaust deniers. You are NO more dignified.

  • Horatio the Orator 02/10/2011 3:39:00 AM

Pete Kost's Article is it self a prostitution of the ideals of true journalism. Notice the nature of all of the advertisers surrounding the article. Observe the vitriolic rancor that reveals a personal jaundice. Mentioning the Vatican in any way in this article serves not real purpose to the theme. The references to data from journalistic investigation are ineffective. This is a sad-sack piece that needs to be wrapped in a brown bag and made available from shelves out of sight of decent people. The real prostitution going on in Superbowl 45 is those who promote and conduct it, fortunately for them, its legal.

  • Triffid_day 02/09/2011 12:06:00 AM

Has anyone seen the results of the sex traffic purge in England. 47 police forces, loads of doors knocked down, many arrests, millions of pounds of resources. Results - not a lot. Reminded me of the snuff movie scare in the 80's. Think that the FBI expended many resouces and found nothing. Sound familiar?

  • 02/08/2011 12:24:00 PM

It is entirely possible to be both FOR human rights and the dignity of men and also be AGAINST the horrors human trafficking, rape, and torture of men and women. They are separate issues. Propaganda and misinformation harms everyone, especially when they are used as a means to a political end. There are people I know who have suffered endless years of anxiety, depression and trauma from being Falsely Accused of crimes, and some who were also convicted, imprisoned, and tortured and raped themselves. We cannot engage in "Oppression Olympics." We must follow the examples of Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., or since you bring up the Holocaust, people like Oscar Schindler. Human dignity, freedom, and health are only possible when we value and protect each other equally: men, women, and children -- it's what I stand for and I hope you do, too. Sites/media that everyone should know about as they are directed at educating, empowering, and working towards solutions to both of the issues I've mentioned above: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Rehabilitation_Council_for_Torture_Victims http://www.irct.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Life_of_Words http://humiliationstudies.org/ http://humiliationstudies.org/whoweare/whoweare.php While some things are indeed sad, there is hope.

  • Twittyswister 02/08/2011 12:03:00 PM

"If stats were exaggerated it does not mean there's not a problem ,..." Do you get out a bazooka to shoot flies ? Apparently the idea makes sense to you so I guess you would if you could . The problem is NOT enormous . It's called perspective and you need to get some . You MUST be one the activists who are being called on the carpet for their lies because nobody else would argue so irrationally without any real proof (Youtube doesn't count ... sorry .)

  • Twittyswister 02/08/2011 11:56:00 AM

So if somebody on Youtube says it , it must be true ! You must be one of these activists we're referring to because you can't seem to figure out , no matter how clearly it's spelled out to you , that you're doing more harm than good . Yeah everybody is a coward ... except you of course . What makes you so special ? Because you're "taking a stand" . Ha ha ... that's just pathetic . Taking a stand with an hysterical mob of like-minded individuals is hardly taking a stand . That's like saying you refuse to tolerate people blowing smoke into the faces of babies as though a) anybody actually does it and b) anybody tolerates it in the first place . You're just a mindless follower . Like so many who consider themselves champions of "social justice" you're pretty much completely incapable of viewing the matter outside of a vacuum . By believing this nonsense so unquestioningly you're literally making the world a worse place . I noticed , as well , that you offered no credible refutations of what was stated in the article . As I said before , you need to know where the information came from and how it was derived before swallowing it whole . I know that that's far too much to expect from the likes of you but you could still try it . Not that you'll ever allow yourself to believe you've been duped (think about that right now in fact : Is it possible that you've been lied to and could you accept this truth ?)

  • yb 02/08/2011 8:20:00 AM

Maggie, what are you doing to help abused girls? You talk all this smack but really you are just defending prostitution so you can profit from it, really. What kid have you gotten off the streets? Sounds like you've put more out on the streets and don't want people to know what they went through to get there. Give me a break that you give a shit. No one who tries to evade the issue of how many get into it as kids is doing anything to help. You are a business woman and you've made that clear.

  • sick 02/08/2011 8:14:00 AM

What a load of crap. Give me a break - most people working in child protection make almost nothing. They don't take those jobs for cash, are you crazy?? Have you seen a social workers salary lately? You can make more at taco bell. What an uninformed load of BS. You people are seriously SICK. You are so invested in keeping kids abused that you are willing to LIE about those trying to protect them. I've never seen this much EVIL in the observer before but I guess the Observer makes all its money on Porn so big shocker. This is pure EVIL though. Evil through and through. Gross, you sick people are so gross and sociopathic.

Yep, there's your claim to fame. Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad.

  • Twittyswister 02/07/2011 10:02:00 PM

Who's putting misinformation out there again ? Did you actually read the article properly ? That's the whole point of the article ... the misinformation being disseminated . These groups of activists are whipping up hysteria and paranoia over a problem that they're quite consciously grossly exaggerating . Why are they doing this ? Two reasons : They genuinely want to combat a problem that , for whatever reason , they have a personal association with . They know that if you say that there's only one or two sex slaves (maybe) nobody will pay much attention to them . Their answer , therefore , is to get everybody else worked up about it by cooking the books . The second reason they want to misinform the general public and whip up public furor is because if they can't prove there's a problem then the funding dries up . Many of them probably don't even know that they're basically spouting falsehoods and misleading fabrications straight out of Dr. Seuss' fantasy world . They just hear something and figure that it's "Shocking ! Think of the children !". Go ahead , send them a letter and ask them where they got their information from . Then ask them if their sources work in the scientific community . What you're going to find is that their sources are simply other activists with the same penchant for gullibility in the same funding predicament as all the other organizations of this sort . You will NOT get a peer-reviewed , scientific study that actually says what these guys are claiming it says . Usually these groups just cherry-pick and take everything out of context and further , usually the context refutes the general notion that the activists are trying to get you worked up about . It's an old trick actually .

  • Twittyswister 02/07/2011 9:57:00 PM

You're so gullible . I mean really , you've got the histrionics , the hyperbole , and the ad-hominems but you haven't got the most important thing of all ... a clue . Have I left Texas ? Ha ha ha ... I've never even BEEN to Texas . I'm currently living in China though ... gosh , does that count ? When it comes to naivety , you guys take the cake . It's unbelievable really . Somebody tells you something SO RIDICULOUS it should be obvious , and you just soak it up without for a second giving it any thought . And of course you need to make your stupid accusations. I'm heartless ? You're just stupid . Really , you must be because I explained rather clearly how your lack of forethought caused more damage to those that are already begging for help than you're willing to give them . Your own selfish pet causes are what are making your community a worse place for those who need help but hey , you just keep on getting your gitch in a knot because a bunch of career leaches told you an incredible number . Clearly you don't think much nor have you ever pondered over the old adage that the road to hell is paved with good intentions .

What the He!! Is going on in our society?? It’s become so absolutely clear to me that this so called feminist movement has become nothing more than hate mongers willing to spread lies and distortions of reality at any cost to us all. I am shocked, I am amazed, and I am deeply offended that my children are to grow up in a world where the “N” word has “fashionably” been reformed to the “M” word by these victim groups! Pure and simple, these are hate crimes! Authorities should be embarrassed by their naivety, reprimanded for their costly involvement in this scam and prosecuting the perpetrators of injustice for hate crimes!

Great to read someone treating those outrageous allegations with the sarcasm they deserve. It's staggering to realize that the level of numeracy has dropped so low that people could swallow those inflated numbers. I can't believe that anyone could take the alleged extent of the problem seriously. Talk about a big lie, just multiply everything by 1,000.

Just add it to the Super Bowl Domestic Violence Myth from the mid nineties. DV shelters are still raising funds every year around the Big Game, based on similarly fraudulent stats and hype supplied by politicians with an eye for easy votes based on public ignorance. First all men are wife beaters, now we are all rapists and pedophiles. Hey, whatever raises a buck, right? I commend this publication for actually addressing the subject with some intellectual honesty, and I encourage you to do more of the same with the countless lies that these so called "advocacy groups" have been spreading for years. http://www.avoiceformen.com

  • 02/06/2011 5:57:00 PM

Thank you for having the courage to investigate and report on this, a rare trait in the media. Traffik911 and Change.org are promoting fictitious and unsupported statistics to create moral panic. They have greatly exaggerated the amount of trafficked children and implied criminality of superbowl fans. They are also using coercive tactics to pressure the superbowl committee for free advertising for their campaign. These ad campaigns won’t do anything to stop child trafficking, it is just popularizing false perceptions about men and prostitutes. This type of propaganda campaign is nothing new for these activist organizations. We’ve seen it before with the superbowl DV myth and false advertising of DV as solely male perpetrator and child sexual assault as solely female victim. We now have access to much better research, but the media is still complacent with parroting unsupported statistics which misrepresent the problem Bad statistics make bad policies, be wary of the 1 in 4 claims, they are also a complete misrepresentation.

  • Maggie McNeill 02/05/2011 6:00:00 PM

There's no "peddling" involved. The statistics support what I've seen and every other escort has seen, and are similar to statistics from the English Collective of Prostitutes, the French Collective Prostitutes and the official New Zealand government study performed in 2005 as a follow-up to their 2003 decriminalization law (http://www.justice.govt.nz/policy-and-consultation/legislation/prostitution-law-review-committee/publications/plrc-report/report-of-the-prostitution-law-review-committee-on-the-operation-of-the-prostitution-reform-act-2003). The difference between me and fanatics is that I respect the intelligence of my audience and therefore expect them to check up on me, while the prohibitionist fanatics hope to control the perception of their audience by demonizing those who call their math into question as "pimps" or "monsters", as is evident in this very thread.

  • Naja 02/05/2011 5:05:00 PM

Funny how you denounce the methodology of stakeholders such as feminist organizations and rescue groups while simultaneously peddling the statistics of an interest group, the National Task Force on Prostitution, who want prostitution legalized. Of course, I'm sure escorts are more familiar with money than methodology...

  • Naja 02/05/2011 5:00:00 PM

Escort services are different from the streets. Streetwalkers have different rules of engagement. If you're ever in Houston at 7 in the morning, go the corner of Airline and Crosstimbers and count the men that accompany scantily-clad women when it's 40 degrees outside. I doubt this is unique to Houston. And of course, I won't get into our extensive "massage parlor" industry on the north side...

  • *** 02/05/2011 4:00:00 PM

Lies, lies and more damned lies. And, like always - you need to follow the money. Figure out which politician or agency benefits the most from the uproar and there's your source. And to "anonymous" - do you really think the FBI and the various concerned agencies are above twisting "statistics" (a curse word if there ever was one) to benefit themselves and their funding? P-u-l-e-e-z-e.

  • Normaja 02/04/2011 11:51:00 PM

And one more thing... Maggie is correct- the pimps of the sort that the media likes to portray as being in control of us po' 'hos are indeed rare. On the other hand, anyone to whom a prostitute gives their earnings is considered to be a 'pimp,' regardless of the real relationship between a sex worker and any other individual to whom the prostitute gives money... for example, when I left the LAPD but still owed money to the police credit union, I continued to make payments to them for my Honda Prelude, using my earnings as a prostitute to do so. Under the laws of California, that made the LAPD Credit Union my pimp... but no one ever arrested them!!! And finally, every football player out there at the Superbowl (and all the ones who didn't make it to the Superbowl this year) have the equivalent of a pimp- and that would be their manager or agent. These individuals negotiate the contract for their player so that the player doesn't have to... and yet we don't consider football ( or basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball) players to be 'under the control' of their agents or managers! Why can't grown sex workers have agents as well? How about when we need your help, we'll call you? Would that be okay?

  • Normaja 02/04/2011 11:41:00 PM

Every single organization you mention regarding child prostitution makes its money from there being lots of 'victims.' If the Center for Missing and Exploited Kids can't report that there are hundreds of thousands of child sex slaves, they won't keep their jobs and will have to visit the unemployment line like millions of other Americans. But as long as there are ignorant suckers who believe every single tear jerking sentence that comes out of their mouth, they've got it made. The FBI considers 18 year old women to be 'children.' And when FBI agents go out to make these big stings, they arrest those 'children' and call it being rescued!!!! I wonder how many victims of pedophilac priests and Boy Scout leaders get arrested by the FBI? Why we don't have undercover sting operations targeting those perverted priests (and Boy Scout Leaders and Baptist Ministers, ad nauseum) if everyone is so concerned about the exploited kids? Or does it only matter to you when it involves prostitution? By the way, when cops have sex with underage prostitutes, very seldom do the cops get sent to prison- they MAY get fired, but usually not. Sounds like there is more concern about what some people consider immoral adult behavior than actual concern about those doe eyed beauties of any age. And I say again, the author is making fun of the hyper inflated statistics, as rightfully any intelligent person would when confronted by these imbecilic numbers. It makes no difference if the fanciful (false) statistics are about children or adults, but because so many more people will become outraged if the media makes these claims about children rather than adults, they use children (17 and 18 year olds?) to peddle their propaganda. If you truly care about the victims of rape and child exploitation, demand that the FBI and your local law enforcement agents stop arresting the children, and stop arresting the consenting adult men and women who engage in consenting adult commercial sex and who are NOT victims of anything but societal ignorance and stupidity.

  • Maggie McNeill 02/04/2011 8:17:00 PM

It's not remotely "misinformation", Anonymous; abusive, controlling, stereotyped pimps are relatively rare. Internet and service escorts (who make up 60% of American prostitutes) nearly never have them, and even among street-based prostitutes (estimated by the National Prostitution Taskforce as only about 15% of all prostitutes) only about half have a pimp of ANY KIND, and in roughly half of those cases the pimp works for the girl rather than vice-versa. The problem is that outsiders (including cops, feminist organizations, "rescue" groups and people like yourself) tend to interpret EVERY non-client male who accompanies or works with a prostitute as a "pimp", though the majority are husbands, boyfriends, drivers, bodyguards, escort service owners, brothers, sons or roommates (who may even be gay prostitutes). And you know what gives the small number of true, abusive, controlling pimps their power over girls? The illegality of their profession, which makes it impossible for those girls to seek help. You want to save girls from pimps? Support decriminalization of prostitution. If you won't put your money where your mouth is, please stop pretending to be so worried about the welfare of hookers.

  • anonymous 02/04/2011 7:15:00 PM

Normaja - You might want to go back and read the article - the author makes references to Child Trafficking issues and victims and then goes on to discount and make fun. His words "Doe-eyed beauties from the Heartland would be peddled like Jell-O shots at the Delta Phi soiree." Tacky when the "peddled" kids being talked about are child rape victims. If the stats are exaggerated, it does not discount that there are tremendous numbers of abused and trafficked kids and this article is in very, very bad taste. And he's quoted Maggie saying that pimps are "rare." Maybe the FBI, and The Center For Missing and Exploited Kids did not get Maggie's memo, but that's a load of crap and a horrifyingly dangerous thing to say. http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2010/may/trafficking_052010/sex-trafficking-convictions-seattle-gang-dismantled http://washingtondc.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel10/wfo110110a.htm http://www.foxtoledo.com/dpp/news/national/FBI--69-children--99-pimps-found-in-national-bust http://www.foxtoledo.com/dpp/news/national/FBI--69-children--99-pimps-found-in-national-bust The article could have been written to address the stats without denying victims reality or putting misinformation out there.

  • guest 02/04/2011 7:02:00 PM

"...found that, of men who were convicted of paying to have sex with children: • 42% were either married or involved in a serious relationship • 48% had either a college or other advanced degree • 78% were employed full time • 55% had personal incomes in excess of $30,000 per year • 97% identified themselves as being “straight”; • 70% were younger than 40 years of age • 61% indicated that they had had prior lifetime sexual experiences with prostitutes Compare those numbers to the most likely people to attend a Super Bowl." Okay, let's do that. What percentage of men who have attended the Super Bowl have been convicted of paying to have sex with children? When it comes to convicted pedophiles, what distinguishes them is not their age, relationship background, sexual orientation, or income, or anything else. What distinguishes them is that they were convicted of paying to have sex with children. If 48% of men convicted of paying to have sex with children were black, it doesn't follow that 48% of black males are pedophiles. But it seems to me that you are misusing or introducing irrelevant statistics to try and paint all males that attend the Super Bowl with the same brush. That is so stupid as to be almost criminal.

"You're a porn addict, right? Don't be ashamed, it's okay. But, rubbing your peter raw obsessively is going to make you lousy in bed, son!" I take it you're offended by my suggestion that people who promote the Super Bowl Prostitute Myth are like Holocaust deniers. I appreciate you sharing with us your self-acquired familiarity with masturbation, but if you find my suggestion objectionable, why not offer something relevant to refute it? Sunshine, we all agree that prostitution and in particular child prostitution is morally repugnant and should be illegal. And I don't doubt that a few people who attend the Super Bowl are going to 'go shopping', as one might put it. But statistically, when you have that large a number of people attending any public event, from out of town, you are going to get johns. There is nothing special about the Super Bowl attracting johns and prostitutes - and in fact all the statistical evidence seems to support this. So why pick on the Super Bowl? You're just as likely to get as many buyers and sellers of sex at the average Republican National Convention, if not more. And it DOES matter whether its 100,000 prostitutes or just 20, because police services cost money. Money that is misallocated to address an exaggerated or nonexistent problem is money and resources that could be allocated to very real problems that are just as harmful, such as drunk driving or drug trafficking - problems that are much more likely to occur at an event such as the Super Bowl. Waving your morality penis around is just a form of mental masturbation. Public mental masturbation...But I guess that's okay with you since you seem to be so interested in acquiring additional practice in the matter.

"Child Trafficking (read rape) is ABSOLUTELY NOT a subject for a comedic piece. This is nauseating and so sad. " Indeed it is sad when there is actual child trafficking. However, the piece is not about child trafficking- it is about the media hyping something that isn't happening- the hysteria that all children are being forced into prostitution and sent to work as sex slaves at the Superbowl... And while it is equally appalling that there are pedophile priests out there molesting children, the fact is that the majority of priests are NOT doing that and when the media portrays all priests as perverts, it is an injustice to all those who are not. Look, folks, if the media thinks it can sell more papers by floating hyper inflated stats about prostitutes, it is going to go with whatever BS it can get away with. This article just points that out. It does not make light of pedophilia committed by sports fans OR priests. Rape is a serious issue and the word 'rape' should never be applied to situations in which the adult 'victims' tell you that they were NOT raped. When a sex worker says they chose to engage in sex work, do not tell them they are victims of some abstract theory of objectification because by doing so, you diminish the real harm caused to real victims.

  • Normaja 02/04/2011 5:02:00 PM

Tonjya: The term "Sex worker " applies to anyone in the sex industry- including prostitutes, but while all prostitutes are sex workers, not all sex workers are prostitutes. There are porn actors, phone sex operators, those who write for the adult magazines, those who produce adult material-etc. all of them are considered 'sex workers." Of these, only prostitutes are outlaws and get arrested or raped by cops (through extortion), sent to jail where they are raped by correctional officers ("well, after all this woman sells it so I can get a piece of her"), all in order to save them from being 'objectified.' I personally would rather be 'objectified' as sex worker making $500 an hour than to be 'objectified' as a waiter at a fast food establishment making minimum wage. Please show me a concrete example (as opposed to a subjective one) of harm caused by being paid to give pleasure. If I have sex with 10,000 men and don't charge, no one comes to 'rescue' me and tell me I am a 'victim' but if one of those men gives me a gift of, say, $500, suddenly I am being objectified and need the help of a rescue organization? Oh Please!!!! Us adult sex workers (I am retired) really do know more about what is happening in our industry than someone like you or even the cops and especially more than the people who operate the faith based and fully funded rescue organizations. While you may object to our work, you certainly don't have a right to accuse any of us of "exaggerating things in the other direction" because you have absolutely no proof that we do that or that we even have a motive for doing that.

  • anonymous 02/04/2011 5:01:00 PM

Pete Kotz - you should have to apologize directly to every kid who has been tortured, raped and pimped for spreading BS like the idea that pimps are "rare." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fX6EaHuRCg You should spend the rest of your life watching films like "Very Young Girls" and volunteering at places like SAGE: http://www.sagesf.org/html/survivor_voices.htm Have you ever talked to women who have been raped as kids, locked up, drugged up, had their lives stolen, and almost killed by pimps? A lot of us who are commenting here, have. Because we've worked and volunteered to help these kids and women and what you are writing here is heinous denial. This is the SADDEST thing I have seen the Observer do in a long, long time. Where is Andrea Grimes when you need her? Devastating to deny victims, it's truly devastating and so, so, so hurtful to those already hurt. Child Trafficking (read rape) is ABSOLUTELY NOT a subject for a comedic piece. This is nauseating and so sad.

Funny, but could have been funnier if you used example of the Vikings sailing on lake Minnetonka instead. Clearly, the exaggeration and grandstanding is amusingly exaggerated. But please, don't try to use the spin from a Madam as truth--she is going to exaggerate things in the other direction. It's irresponsible journalism to not quote her without a raised eyebrow, even in a funny piece like this. "Sex Worker" is a funny euphasim. It's called "prostitute", and yes, it really is a terrible thing that objectives people to all parties harm.

  • BDevereaux 02/04/2011 4:01:00 PM

*Sigh* Ms. McNeill and myself (yes another sex worker, and there are many others like us who feel the same) are NOT denying the fact that there are underaged girls and vulnerable women who are controlled by violent pimps being trafficked any and everywhere for the purpose of sex slavery. Yes, it exists. Yes, we care. Yes, we would help combat the problem if allowed. What we are questioning is the hysteria and the numbers that are being manipulated to convince the public that it is a bigger problem than it actually is simply for the sake of 'news' or political and personal agendas. By all means, increase police presence to deter 'child rapists' and 'exploited girls'. I hope you catch at least one (preferably many more) and put them away.

Finally! A reporter with enough sense and enough backbone to shine a spotlight on another one of these Super Bowl myths to show just how ridiculous these claims are! Kudos to Mr. Kotz and the Dallas Observer. So... if there are thousands of children being trafficked to the Super Bowl city to serve as sex slaves, and the politicians, activists, FBI, and local police are aware of this and they have beefed up their staffs to prepare for this incoming flood of underage prostitutes... then next week's newspapers should be full of headlines about the thousands of arrests of pimps, madams and the perverts who are their clients, along with the rescue of thousands of children from the clutches of these slobbering, sex-craved football fans... right? As customers of the news organizations who report on these dire claims, we can expect all of these journalists who are reporting these claims from the activists and politicians to follow up on these stories with an account of just how successful our politicians and public servants have been in combating this massive problem... right? And as voters who pay the taxes that pay the salaries of these politicians and public servants, we should expect to see an accurate account of a problem this severe and some pretty significant results from all of this activity... right? I will be eagerly awaiting next week's headlines. John Q. Public Anytown, USA

Oh , and before I forget , you called me heartless . In fact , you called everybody who questioned such an obviously grossly-inflated claim of 100,000 sex slaves coming to town heartless . So I guess you prefer to waste money on non-existent problems rather than putting it towards REAL problems ? 100,000 or 20 (more like 0 actually) DOES MATTER because those millions of dollars could be spent helping people who , because of your line of thinking , have to go another day without food , shelter , etc. Yeah , good job thinking pretty much everything through . You failed kindergarten didn't you ?

  • Twittyswister 02/04/2011 12:49:00 PM

No , apparently it's all about YOU . I missed the point ? No , apparently you did . What are you doing about this "problem" ? Nothing of course ... and I know why too . There IS NO PROBLEM like it's being fed to you oh super-gullible one . Are you helping the homeless ? Are you raising money for cancer research ? Are you buying up acres of rainforest for future generations to enjoy ? No... of course not . YOU THINK THAT THE ONLY PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD ARE THE ONES THAT YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN ! There are some big problems in the world that need fixing right now . Instead of focusing on those you buy into this crap about an army of sex slaves invading Dallas despite a complete lack of evidence for the claim . Hey , you want to be a complete moron and believe whatever people tell you (let me guess , you consider the Enquirer and Wikipedia to be credible and valid sources of information don't you ?) then go ahead . No no ... don't stop and think for a second or apply common sense . You're SHOCKED ! and that's all that matters right ? Go and get your stupid five minutes back . Better yet , get a book on scientific methodology , statistics , and the human failing of relying on emotions rather than logic to figure things out . Actually , even better than that , why don't you go and ease the suffering of all these supposed underage sex slaves . When you find them (and it should be pretty easy shouldn't it ?) make sure to tell somebody because as of right now they're just figments of activist's imaginations .
