Downright Loopy

As far as we know, New York City writer/performer Faye Lane is not the long lost daughter of Truvy Jones, the sassy beauty shop operator played by Dolly Parton in the film Steel Magnolias. However, her Texas-flavored cabaret show, Beauty Shop Stories, is cut from the same cloth, telling the autobiographical tale of a chubby little Texas girl growing up in her mother's beauty shop. Told through monologues and cabaret numbers, this irreverent comedy kicks off WaterTower Theatre's Out of the Loop Fringe Festival at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The festival also features a host of local groups performing theater and dance pieces, including Audacity Theatre Lab, Broken Gears Project Theatre, Dallas Cabaret Artists, Muscle Memory Dance Theatre and many more. Notable shows include The Great White Way, a backstage farce about a Jaws-esque Broadway musical; David Lee Nelson...Status Update, an autobiographical piece about a "standup comedian going through a divorce, getting sober and taking lots of naps;" and Debutante Warriors: Girl Power in 3D, a comic-book adaptation presented by writer/director Russell DeGrazier, whom you might remember from his role as East Dillon Lions assistant coach Stan Traub on Friday Night Lights.

The festival continues through March 13, with closing weekend headlining performances from former Daily Show correspondent Lauren Weedman (the New York Times-approved No...You Shut Up) and Emmy award winner Robert Wuhl--of Batman, Bull Durham and Arli$$ fame--who will perform his one-man show, Assume the Position, based on his HBO show of the same name. Festival passes are $65. Tickets for individual performances are $10 to $20. Call 972-450-6232 or visit watertowertheatre.org for tickets, showtimes and festival info.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: March 3. Continues through March 13, 2011
