Natalie Portman may have pretty well convinced you with her Black Swan performance that ballet really does boil down to cracked toes, tortured bodies and psychotic ballerinas. And maybe it does--depends on the plot of the ballet, we suppose--but dance is also an art form that is at once athletic, graceful and stunning, wherein dancers work their bodies hard enough to make the effort of beauty look beautifully effortless. But don't take our word for it, go check out the Texas Ballet Theater's 50th Anniversary Weekend of Dance at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, 2403 Flora St. This series of events is a great way to ease into the world of dance, since you get a sampling of traditional ballet (the stuff Balanchine choreographed) and the modern stuff too. Tickets are $19 to $99. Call 214-369-5200 or visit texasballettheater.org.
