Dance Old and New

For a lot of gringos, Cinco De Mayo exists as little more than an excuse to go out and hit up the bars, in which case the most culture they'll get out of the event is ordering a cheese-infused chimichanga at a Tex-Mex joint. Do yourself a favor, put down the Dos Equis, and head out to Norteno Bravo instead for a dose of authentic Mexican culture. The Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico presents this Texas-sized event, easily one of North Texas' largest Cinco de Mayo shows around. European, Mexican and Old West influences come together in arrangements designed to portray the customs and practices of the Mexican people during this national holiday. The troupe is joined by Latin Grammy and Tejano award-winner Michael Salgado, who will perform songs from his most recent album, Corridos Para Mi Gente. The Ballet Folklorico is a non-profit organization that has promoted cultural awareness through programs like this, as well as dance camps and classes for 35 years. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Tickets start at $27.50. Call 214-828-0181 or visit anmbf.org for more information.
