Few things are more depressing than day-old doughnuts. I found this out as part of the custodial staff for the UNT University Union, where the sympathetic employees in the deli store would give us leftover pastries they otherwise would have had to throw out after closing time. They look fine, but one bite proves them stale and bland. But the current exhibition at 500X Gallery (500 Exposition Ave.), Day Old Donut, on display noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through May 29, sounds anything but stale and bland. Matt D. Clark shows a sculpture that references accumulation (familiar to anyone who's kept a doughnut past its prime), Clayton Hurt shows works that combine animals and signage to suggest the "bitter/sweet plight of possible marketing strategies" (sort of like how the gift of a day-old doughnut is bittersweet) and Joel Kiser arranges "Americana kitsch" through the eyes of an adolescent fanboy (fanboys love doughnuts). Visit 500x.org.
Saturdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: May 21. Continues through May 29, 2011
