A Moving Memorial

It is unfortunate that Memorial Day has become more synonymous with barbecues and boat rides than it does the military. It is also unfortunate that some people cannot even tell you what the day commemorates other than a long weekend. But for those of you who do know and remember what Memorial Day stands for, you have an opportunity this Sunday to participate in White Rock Lake's annual Carry The Load walk. Unlike other 5Ks, this walk goes from 4 p.m. Sunday to 12:11 p.m. Monday and challenges participants to (literally) carry a physical load (via backpack) around the 9.3-mile loop around the lake to signify recognition of our armed forces, law enforcement and firemen and the sacrifices they make each day to protect our homes and our freedom. Walk for an hour, walk for four or walk all night; just take the opportunity to show patriotism, respect and appreciation for those who risk their lives for us. The entry fee is only $50 per person, or $45 per person if registering as a team, and includes a T-shirt and meal coupons. To register, volunteer, donate or for any other information, visit carrytheload.org.
