While Chinese-born, U.S.-based contemporary artist Xiaoze Xie's works possess clearly political undertones, the figures and depictions in most of his works are reduced to abstract forms highlighting the transitory nature of time and its effects on memory and history—collective and individual. He's known for photo-realistic paintings of stacked newspapers and books, as well as images depicting political figures of the East and West. Similarly, Vernon Fisher's overtly narrative paintings feature his experiments in merging fragmentary text and images. Fisher lives and works in Fort Worth, and, in 2010, he was honored with a retrospective, K-Mart Conceptualism, at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Xiaoze Xie: Transient Memories and Vernon Fisher: 1989-1999 are on exhibition through June 30 at Dunn and Brown Contemporary, 5020 Tracy St. The gallery is to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission is free. Call 214-521-4322 or visit dunnandbrown.com.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: May 31. Continues through June 30, 2011
