Bookmarked For the Beach Bag

It's the season of the beach read. Whether or not you are actually on the beach, summer makes us think of books that engage us, and take our overworked minds on vacation for a little while. That's not to say that beach reads are all fluff, and that's definitely not the case with Karen White's The Beach Trees, which tells the story of Julie, whose younger sister disappeared from a park at a young age. The story is one of searching, Southern family histories and solitary secrets, mostly set in Biloxi, Mississippi. It's nearly universally relatable, whether it's a beach read or just a read of the moment. White further engages her readers with a book discussion and signing of The Beach Trees 7 p.m. Thursday at Barnes & Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Highway. Admission is free. Call 214-739-3643 or visit karen-white.com.
