If You're Looking for Something Concrete...

The latest abstract expressionist to captivate art enthusiasts is, of course, 4-year-old Australian painter Aelita Andre, who currently has her own solo exhibition in New York City. Not surprisingly, many Andre fans find her work reminiscent of Jackson Pollock's paintings, but they are also seemingly influence by the works of Esteban Vicente. Vicente, a Spanish painter who moved to New York in 1936 and had his first solo show in 1937, was a founding member of the New York Studio School and a major player in the abstract expressionist movement. To better comprehend what little Aelita is trying to say through her art, view Concrete Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by Esteban Vicente, the latest exhibition on display at the Meadows Museum at SMU, 5900 Bishop Blvd. The show continues through July 31 and features 81 of Vicente's works, including collages and polychrome sculptures. For more information, call 214-768-2516 or visit smu.edu/meadowsmuseum.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: June 9. Continues through July 31, 2011
