Stoker's A Natural Beauty
Native Texas painter Jim Stoker's works are irrefutably influenced by nature. His pieces showcase natural beauty like trees changing color or water washing over pebbles, as well as pop-art depictions of large birds in suburban life. For instance, his 70-by-50-inch oil-on-linen piece titled "No Place To Live: Whooper Burgers" spotlights a crane in flight, wings spread out, sailing in a clear blue sky with a McDonald's sign directly behind. Stoker retired as Professor of Art, Emeritus in 1996 after more than 30 years of teaching at Trinity University in San Antonio. Needless to say, over the years Stoker accumulated a noteworthy body of paintings. Jim Stoker: Retrospective is on display through July 9 at Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden, 6616 Spring Valley Road. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
