You sound like an idiot. The working class don't need someone homeless to remind them to work. I think feeding yourself and having income is enough to keep people going. I hope sarcasm was involved in this.

This is America. It just isn't the America we think it is. I have a police scanner and man if a 911 call comes in reporting a homeless person or panhandler, they are all over it. I don't think Hunt or anyone for that matter on the City Council has a clue. I mean you look at their Facebook pages and all it is about is who they rubbed elbows with, where they had dinner, or what famous person they met today. If I was a politician and had a forum to talk to my constituents, I would be telling them what pothole I got fixed today, and how I was making Dallas a better place. You have 5,000 people driving up to get housing assistance, everyone with a cell phone and you can bet cable TV at home, yet the folks that have no place to urinate except a park are arrested or ticketed. Yeah Angela, when you get to heaven, I hope God is impressed with all the stressful luncheons you endured with those famous snobs you post about all the time. Keep up the good work!

The issue is that the homeless are not in the correct places. They need to be relocated to working class neighborhoods. Because in a capitalist society, the function of the homeless is to remind the working class that they cannot slack off in their menial jobs. But the working class long ago fled Dallas for the 'burbs. Therefore, in respect of our free market capitalist society, all homeless must be rounded up and shipped to Plano, Frisco, Keller, etc.

Angela Hunt simply cares about elections and not the people.....I call that an abuse of power....or....a lack of responsiblity for ALL people in the community.....for that I would accuse Angela Hunt as being anti-American.

If the public park doesn't have appropriate places to piss...then maybe that's the issue then?....think about it....if you were forced to live outside....and had to take a piss....and there was no place to piss....and all the resturants won't let you in....what are you going to do? Piss on a tree.....or piss on a car in the parking lot?

Making a homeless person a criminal does nothing but shut them further out....way to get people to hate you more then they already did....

Wow...interesting......some people have metal illness caused by our culture....some people have finanical ruin caused by our culture.....some people are simply useless caused by our culture....some people have drug dependencies caused by our culture.
No amount of money will fix this problem. Only changes in culture will......and I don't mean shoving a bible up every anus.

I like what you say here but you are preaching a bit. It really does not have to be turned into a classist issue. If you have a grasp of wisdom then share it as a gift, offered not instructed.

wait for them to urinate in public, especially if there's a child there, report them for indecent exposure with a child present and voila, sex offender status and they have to register as a sex offender and they are barred from public parks where kids gather!!!1

I could not agree more. Not to mention, try going to any park in this city with a kid who needs to use the potty. If you're lucky, there might be a port-a-potty nearby, but if there is I can guarantee that it is nasty. Real cities do have public restrooms that are maintained by public employees and locked in the evening to prevent people from using them for ill purposes during the night. This city is really lame when it comes to maintaining a budget for public parks and thier upkeep. Our local park doesn't even have benches, I can guess because they are afraid people will sleep on them. Nevermind a pregnant lady might need a seat.

Angela Hunt does not duck. She comes right at it and she is usually right on target, including this time. There is a law against urinating in public and it should be enforced---especially in parks.

Just because someone is homeless, doesn't make them a bum, and all bums are not homeless. Homeless is a state of physical existence, bum is a derogatory term used to describe someone that solely lives off of others out of laziness. So lets get our prejudices straight please. With that said, Dallas may want to think about having some public restrooms. I know it won't completely solve the problem, but most real cities have them :)

Some people at the bridge ,are trying to find work , I have seen and talked with them personly. Its hard to get money for the buses, it hard to find a job and get there without a car , gas money ,insurance , some thing nice to wear ,an hairbrush, tooth paste, thoothbrush , a shower. Everythings cost money ,even at the bridge its hard. And additics are hooked into a life of misery. Some have given up ,and lost hope ,of ever having a life that matters. I don't like the smell of piss ,in the parks either, If they don't keep the rules at the Bridge ,they are out. I would not want to be in their shoes ,except for the grace of God there go I. I don't have all the answeres , and I don't want them around children . So when u kick them out, where should they go? The poor will always be with us. And some will always be and live the bum life. But they are still humans, who need compassion. Maybe we should provide for the hard core ,wonders who want to live like that. Some of them have ,fear of the establishment . Because they are sick in heart and soul and body. They need a place to go , their own park . Like I said ,I don't have all the answeres , but I do have compassion for them.

The self righteous people complaining are part of the reason why those people in need are there. Do your homework before you comment on what should be done with these poor people. The Bridge Homeless Aliance of Dallas is an exemplary of what can be accomplished for these people. The "Bridge" is not and cannot be the end all solution for life for all these people. Urinating in public is a crime and when it's caught, the Police of course, do thier job. Don't brag about giving a panhandler money. Ten dollars didn't do anything to change that persons life. Donate your money to the "Bridge", a food pantry or volunteer somewhere they are helping the homeless and needy. Next time a panhandler comes to you, take them and buy what they need. Don't throw cash at a potential addict or alcoholic. That makes it that much harder to stop the panhandling and to turn that persons life around. We are our brother's keeper. It's a community problem and only "us" as individual community members can solve it.

Stupid column.
Bourgeois? Is that what this is? If you were to give the homeless a lottery's winning they would still be the homeless. That is because that is what they choose. They would simply be rich bums (Yep, I said it), at least temporarily. They would still smell, wear dirty clothes, and urinate on park benches, with the exception of having the money to buy drugs and/or alchohol. While it is true that most are faced with issues of mental illness and drug/alchohol addiction, they are the people of the street. This is their lifestyle for whatever the reasons and most of them will not change, no matter what social adjustments you attempt to throw at them. That is just a sad but true reality.
Only a Marxist would suggest that are atttitudes are "bourgeois", but have the homeless live near his home, pee on his property, and beg him for money. How tolerant would he be then?
Bourgeois? Really?

Dallas Diner 07/15/2011 6:24:00 PM
I'm posting here the comment I made to Jim's column on the same issue. When I'm standing in a crowd that just finished running a 10K, I expect them to smell. I expect to get hit up by Girl Scouts selling cookies and kids selling candy. I expect to get annoyed by the Jehovah's Witnesses on my doorstep over the weekend, and if I want to talk to crazy people, I can go to my family reunion. But when I go to a park, I don't want the smelly crazy person to sit down next to me, hit me up for money and follow me to the next bench when I move; what I want is to have a quiet hour outside, and read a book undisturbed. What is so wrong about wanting a nice public place? Just because people want a nice public place, it doesn't mean they aren't decent people with genuine concerns for the homeless--it isn't an either/or proposition.

Jogiyo2002 07/14/2011 4:02:00 PM
Sigh, it is so Western to put a bandaid on the symptom but not treat the cause. Why are there bums in parks? Well because there are lots of homeless people. If you actually "hang" with these people, you will find out the varying causes of their homelessness. Many are on some sort of public assistance, and use those checks to buy drugs, plain and simple. When that money runs out, they pan handle. Peeing on park benches, smelling bad, sleeping anywhere they please, and any other number of socially disturbing behaviors. Classist? Um, no. That is a political stab and a kind of lazy name calling. Many of these people are caught in some sort of dramatic downward spiral that often includes drug addiction and various types of mental issues even as simple as depression. Their condition is facilitated by free money (govt assistance), free food, and free lodging (even if that happens to be a nightly snooze at a public park.) Also, at some point, many run into legal problems (get busted for drugs), and then score a felony. The felony(ies), of course, make it difficult or nearly impossible to obtain employment and is permenant enough to solidify their social fate. Our system creates and supports these people. To make it out of this cycle, it damn near takes a miracle and then personal Herculean effort. The type of effort not common in your average down on his luck, depressed, drug addicted, freeloader.
