Price Rally Lesson: Time for Plan B

The Lord doesn't always watch over fools.

Real loser: So, pretend you're a jury pool consultant. Pretend ace white-collar criminal lawyer Billy Ravkind hired you to advise him on the mood and mindset of potential jurors in the eventual and inevitable federal corruption trial of his client, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, currently the target of a metastasizing FBI investigation.

Now, ponder the outcome of last Saturday's "nationwide" day-long rally in support of the embattled commissioner. In an entire day, between 20 and 30 people showed up from the nation to express their support for Price. (Current U.S. population: more than 312 million.)

The crowd at Price's rally would have been disappointing for a retirement party. He was hoping for Tahrir Square.

Some people blamed the heat, but just three miles west, hundreds of morbidly obese people were queuing up to stand for as long as eight hours in triple-digit temperatures outside Gilley's on South Lamar Street to audition for NBC's The Biggest Loser. They were literally risking their lives.

At Price's rally, an aging relic of the civil rights movement named Mukasa Dada provided the weekend's most Dadaesque moment by speaking in praise of Moammar Gadhafi barely 24 hours before the Libyan freedom movement swept into Green Square in Tripoli. (Hey, Dada: History's calling, asking what's holding you up.)

So let's go back to your imaginary status as the jury consultant reading all of these tea leaves and trying to distill out of them some solid advice. What do you tell Ravkind when give him your report on Saturday's nationwide rally?

It's pretty obvious what you tell Ravkind: "Billy, you need to get on the phone to the feds right now. You need to tell them you're ready to do a deal."

Former Dallas city councilman Don Hill wouldn't do a deal, because he didn't think he was guilty, and he said he was putting the case in the hands of the Lord. He got 18 years.

A jury consultant looking at public support for Price right now would be yelling at Ravkind: "Do not, I repeat do NOT put this in the hands of the Lord. Put this one in the hands of the feds. Beg for mercy and ask if there is anybody at all they would like your client to roll on."

But you know what? You really wouldn't have to tell Ravkind that kind of stuff. He'd know it already. The person to tell it to is Price. In fact, Price ought to be the one on the phone to Ravkind.

"Hey, Billy. John. Plan B."

Mukasa Dada looks like a bit player in Planet Of The Apes. JWP has evolved to more of a director of Planet Of The Apes.

You're an idiot. I didn't vote for price, but I sure don't give a damn what he does for the nation. Any person I vote for, I wanna know how they can help me and my family. And, don't be tricked into thinking that a black man got elected because he's black. Give me a break. If John McCain would have got elected, would it have been because he is old?

I hope Price rats out the Perots and takes them down with him for trying to sabotage the Inland Port project and its tens of thousands of jobs for South Dallas.

When I was a kid, I went to school and we said a prayer, then did the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. Then I went to history class and learned what a great nation this really is, how men risked their life, just by signing the Declaration of Independence so I can be free.

Do you know last week a guy went into a casino in Mexico and demanded half of their profits or there would be hell to pay. They refused and this guy went back into the casino and killed at least 40 people and injured about 30 more, many that will die soon.

We have taken politics to a personal level. Rather than try to elect politicians to better our nation and children, we try to better ourselves or our causes. Now we have a bunch of actors telling you what you want to hear. The one that can appeal to the most people wins. It doesn't matter if he is going to do a good job. What matters is how well he reads his teleprompter.

We have given up so many of our rights in this country, it is just a matter of time before the drug cartels spill over into our country (more than they already have) and begin buying off politicians that are not noble: Politicians that were elected because or the color of their skin or their sexual orientation or religion, or whatever other lie they have been able to sell us.

I personally think JWP is an asset to our nation. He is probably the biggest idiot in office I have ever seen with the black hole and all, but he proves my point. He was elected because of his race and what he can do for his voters, not what he can do for his county or even his country. His constituents are looking out for themselves. They think they are doing what will help them, but in the end, they will lose, maybe their children or grandchildren. But someone is going to change this pattern of thinking in this country, be it a nobleman or a drug cartel, you will comply. When you elect the likes of JWP, you have no one else to blame but yourselves.

Everyone is looking out for themselves, who is going to look out for our nation? I will sit back and watch America come to an end like so many other nations, because you selfish idiots aren't going to think about what's best for your country come election time.

God bless and re-elect JWP. I honestly believe God sent him here as a wake up call...which you will ignore, of course.

Uh, racist?

Whet ether you agree with the post or not, why are you bringing a racism accusation?

A) because he calls Price an idiot?B) because he disagrees with you?C) because a racially charged defense is the best offense?

...any of these answers just don't seem to mesh with a definition of racism. However, JWP himself seems to use them all in his own playbook.

If you truly believe that post is racist, at least give more than five words so we can understand your point of view. Was it just sarcasm?

There have been a lot of accusations about the dealing of JWP and other Black/White/Brown/etc The best thing is to have a full investigation and a fair (if warranted) trial. If a jury of his peers does not think he did anything wrong...so be it! Until then, lets stop speculating. I know that is hard for you so called journalists!!

i dunno, it only takes one holdout on the jury and price plays the race card better than oj.

As always, Jim Schutze cuts to chase with razor-sharp accuracy and wit! And to whoever decided to take away the Dallas Observer's kiosk at John's Cafe, 1733 "Lower" Greenville Avenue, three words: BRING. IT. BACK!

Since you seem really mesmerized and hypnotized by this case, allow me to make a suggestion. Unless you have something new, you might want to write about something else until trial time. I'm about "Johnwillied" out of articles like this...

Yep, ask JWP if he prefers the electric chair or lethal injection. Either one should suffice for the kickbacks, thefts, vote buying and selling, and in general, talking like Obama does--- that is promising something out of one side of his mouth while lying his ass off out of the other side. JWP has hurt ALL of the southern Dallas people. He has cost them jobs and income--- all to line his own pocket. NOW JWP, name your poison. You deserve to get what you choose.

Why some folks blindly support someone without knowing the true facts is beyond me.Appears at some point to be a cultural thing. He's black, brown or asian, etc. so they must be picking on him for that reason.People, all walks of life break the law,and if that is so in this or any case let the rule of law work its way. Then if the truth comes out that this or that person is being judged unfairly then hit the streets and the courts with your complaint.Doing so before only makes you look foolish, and like I said, blind.

Hey, Jim Schutze. I'm a fan. Have been for some time. You're not gonna get a lotta love in the places of power. No one who decides to make a living pointing out the foibles of the human race does, nor do they probably expect it. That's what's really wrong with our politicians. They're all sadly, weakly human. They like to think they're better than the great unwashed; a cut above. But the one great all-inclusive truth that binds the human race is that we're all capable of being incredible boneheads. Neither education, I. Q., wealth or social status exempts us. When we attain a little power it usually isn't long before we begin to abuse it. We convince ourselves we deserve the little "extras" for serving, for being leaders. We convince ourselves, like you say Don Hill did, that we did no wrong. You know what will stop all this? Neither do I. But I do believe we need to keep trying. There's no neutral. It's either forward or backward, and backward stinks. So... God bless

Really dude...don't you have something else to do! Didn't the Cowboys lose, didn't a guy kill his two sons, how many days has it been over 100 degrees here in Dallas...your hatred is showing!

yeah, and maybe your commutes never got held up by a complete and utter J.O. session commandered by your douchebag excuse for a "leader" or somesuch? who cares if someone's hatred is showing? let it show. hatred cannot be outlawed. that concept is flawed and ludicrous. stop letting media color your perceptions.

Not-A-Hater
Not-A-Hater

Vicki, Jim Schutze is not a hater. He's a reporter. And what he's reporting is facts. The fact is, right now an overwhelming majority of people in Dallas believe John Wiley Price is guilty of something, possibly even more than one something.

Another fact is that only 20-30 supporters showed up at his recent day-long "national" rally. A "national" rally for a Dallas County Commissioner? Something's showing, all right, but it looks to me more like hubris than hatred. John Wiley Price's hubris, that is. And hubris will bring you down every time.

Yes, JWP is innocent until PROVEN guilty…but at this point, Jim is saying, you might be hard pressed to find enough of his "peers" to form a jury that hasn't judged him already.

As ye reap, so shall ye sow! And chickens really do come home to roost.
