Perry Sticks By His Guns on Social Security

Are you listening, old people?

Eating words: Perhaps it's been awhile since you read Governor Rick Perry's book Fed Up!, in which he chronicles the improbable rise of a D-student. If it has, you may not recall Perry's take on Social Security, which he called a "Ponzi Scheme" created "at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government."

That's not the kind of statement that, as The Washington Post pointed out this week, will get a guy votes "in early-primary states with large retiree populations, such as Florida and South Carolina."

Which is why, just 10 days ago, Perry's spokesman was trying to back the governor away from that less-than-measured stance on the popular program.

"Since jumping into the 2012 GOP nomination race on Saturday, Mr. Perry has tempered his Social Security views," The Wall Street Journal wrote on August 18. "His communications director, Ray Sullivan, said Thursday that he had 'never heard' the governor suggest the program was unconstitutional. Not only that, Mr. Sullivan said, but Fed Up! is not meant to reflect the governor's current views on how to fix the program."

Fair enough. That book came out, like, last year. Views evolve. The wind takes piss new directions. Man changes his mind, right?

Wrong. Perry apparently skipped that issue of the Journal. Here he was on Saturday, during a campaign stop in Iowa:

"It is a Ponzi scheme for these young people. The idea that they're working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie," Perry told the crowd. He added during a later stop in Des Moines, "I haven't backed off anything in my book."

The more Perry refuses to holster this particular weapon in his arsenal, the more kick back he's going to feel on the presidential campaign trail, especially from Mitt Romney, the governor's second-most-feared adversary, right behind his own Tourette's. As the Post reported:

"Romney strategists are quick to note that in his book, Fed Up!, Perry writes that 'By any measure, Social Security is a failure' and calls the program 'something we have been forced to accept for more than 70 years now' that was created 'at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government ... ' Romney's campaign will argue that Perry is against the very idea of Social Security and Medicare, and he will use Perry's book to scare seniors in early-primary states ... "

You know who's gotta be fed up right about now? That Sullivan guy.

There are many people out there that get money form SS and never put a dime into the system. Why? I have worked for over 30 years pumping money into the system and there is no doubt in my mind that SS will not be there for me when I retire. I have to secure my future expenses so I am investing and saving for the future.

The reason is because, here in the US, we have an obligation to "provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty".It's called the "establishment clause" and, according to the Constitution, it's the reason why we have a government at all.

So, for you to complain about how easy life is for people who are incapable of earning a living is not just unAmerican, it's downright inhuman.

You make a good point. Many Republicans likely won't see a dime from Social Security. That's what an off-the-grid, non-taxpayer lifestyle buys you.

Boy as he got you fooled. He will say whatever he thinks you want to hear although will do nothing. You put SS in private accounts that most people cannot handle and then watch the bread lines.

If you cannot manage your own money to provide a return better than SS you need to live in a different country. The USA is designed to reward people who want to succeed and work. If you want the Government to take care of you for the rest of your life, including your savings, you are in the wrong place. A dumb ass could put their money in a CD and make a better return than SS.

I want a Social Security system where the money *I* put in comes back to benefit *me*. Social Security originally, as you know, was not designed this way but rather for those working now to support those who had already retired, with the idea that later those who work now would be supported by newer workers. As more people have been retiring (or been retired) than are working, the system begins to erode and eventually winds up broek. I don't understand why we all cannot agree, at least, that such an erosion requires a change in the system - with urgency.

Just as we plant vegetation to prevent erosion of the soil, if later the soil begins to erode due to a new issue we wouldn't just let the erosion continue until the soil is gone, we'd take action to try something new to prevent it and maybe put some of it back. Let's try something new with Social Security, like converting over to a system that holds OUR money for US when we retire. It would have to be phased in to work.

Wanna knock Guv. Quickdraw of Greathare out of the POTUS posse? Stand up at EVERY public appearance and quote from his book. Ask questions, starting with "reading from your book, Guv'ner..." And make placard and billboards with BOOK TITLE, and PAGE NUMBER, ALONG WITH HIS QUOTE, regarding the issue at hand. He will be permanently back home at Ye Old (and still smoldering) Haunted Governors' Mansion in time for passing out Halloween candy to those who dare to eat it. I can hear the ghostly howls of Miz Ann and Molly already!

Let's think about ANYONE that put ONE PENNY in S.S. with the understanding that they get paid back later (without a CHOICE of having it deducted from their paycheck, either). Anyone in the private sector that takes someones money in exchange for a product or service that never materializes, is guilty of FRAUD and THEFT. Why not the GOVERNMENT???

BC

No one is talking about taking anything from people who are 50+ yrs old . It is the young people who should have the option. Please get educated on this before you dismiss the idea. The Govt. is not your best long term investment option.

BC

Anybody who knows anything about SS knows it has a horrible return on investment, is routinely robbed by the government to do other things with the money, relies on youjng people to put new funds in to pay for us old folks (definition of a Ponzi scheme), forces Americans to invest their money in it whether they want to or not, and finally it is so far afield from what FDR intended it to be, it would make even him roll over in his grave. Pahse the thing out and let young people decide where they want to invest their money.

I agree 100%. I also live in Texas and the man's a nut job. He has done nothing to help the people of Texas. My partner has to pay over $1300.00 each month for his health insurance with blue cross and blue shield. That's more than our house payment. He likes to hear his own voice to bad it makes no sense to anyone.

Even the smart senior citizens know that the SS is flawed. So In opinion SS can be repaired but it needs to be setup so that it can't be touched by government. there is no reason why SS should ever be broke period.

Understand his point morons. At the current status of Social Security now, we are paying alot of money into a system that will not be there "current status" by 2017. So with that in mind, what the "F" do you think he really meant dumbass? I am 40 years old so by that grim look ahead there will be no "F'n" Social Security for me according to that stat. Now do I really want to give my hard earned $ to the "F'n" government? Nope!

Lets get a real story going. Where is the damn transparency in our government. How is it that when they keep balancing the budget we have no idea of what they are balancing. Where is all the money going? How come we citizens can't get a look at this? We're not worthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kaysa Lacy
Kaysa Lacy

You have horrible language for a 40 year old.

I agree that SS is broken and should end. People need to save money on their own, not rely on the government to save for them. Saying this however, we have to end it in a systematic approach.

Rick Perry is a horrible governor non the less. Education issues, immigration issues, and financial issues are way out of control. What is he doing to help our state? Ask yourself that.

No dumbass, he was put there because Bush ran for President, remember!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is like watching those late night talk shows when there is a run for presidency and they take to the streets and ask normal people who is the V.P of the US and they have no idea. James, were you on that show??????????

There is another reason Perry was repeatedly re-elected in Texas. The Texas Democrats insist on nominating individuals whose policy stances that make them unelectable in Texas. You can not nominate a Northeastern Liberal in Texas and expect that person to win a state-wide office.

Ron Paul has explained Why Austrian economics works to the satisfaction of millions or registered voters - so well I have personally spent thousands of dollars helping bring his dream to fruition. What has been touched upon less frequently is WHY we should give it a chance instead of continuing down the Keynesian road to serfdom. You may be unaware that one earner could support quite a large family when we were on the gold standard - it is only the 'progress' we've experienced that makes it so a home with two wage earners can still be below the poverty line. You may also be unaware that since the FED was established in 1913, the dollar (formerly 1/20 ounce of gold) is now 1/1800 ounce of gold. That's right, the value of a dollar has decreased 90 TIMES. There are more people on food stamps now than there were wage earners in 1913. The number of unemployed is over 22% (shadowstats.com). Where in these numbers do you see a shining ray of hope that we are doing the correct thing? These numbers could hardly be worse, even given some national disaster. They're the result of us applying the Keynesian methodology (stimulus and deficit spending) - we've been doing it since 1971. That's when we went off the gold standard, which made this spending possible. Trillions of dollars in stimuli have NOT worked. Now it's time to try something different so we can verify experimentally which course of action is the correct one. You can't know until you compare.

Perry has it right. SS is a joke, and it is a Ponzi Scheme in its current incarnation. The people working today pay for the retired people right now. There is no trust fund.

Let us be able to opt out of SS, much like Obamacare is being ruled unConstitutional. We shouldnt be forced to participate. Let us keep that 15% for our own 401k's.
