Before The Dude (Jeff Bridges) took his mush-mouthed turn as Rooster Cogburn in 2010's True Grit, there was The Duke, an all-American, alpha-male badass who brought home an Oscar for his 1969 portrayal of the slovenly, tough-as-nails U.S. Marshall Cogburn. John Wayne spent most of his storied, 60-year career, however, as a white-hat leading man (be it in a Stetson or green beret), and his persona as a rugged-individualist earned such accolades as a Congressional Gold Medal in 1979 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, posthumously in 1980. This fall, John Wayne Enterprises is offering for view and purchase almost 750 personal items, previously stored in vaults during the 32 years following the actor's death. Heritage Auctions' Design District Annex will host a special public preview of the John Wayne auction collection on Friday through Sunday, preceding online and live auctions in Los Angeles on October 3 through 6. Up for sale are Wayne's 1969 Best Actor Golden Globe awarded for True Grit, an eye-patch worn for that role and the cowboy hat from its sequel, Rooster Cogburn (1975). Other items include over 50 scripts with hand-scrawled annotations, personal correspondence to U.S. presidents and Wayne's driver's license and American Express card. Pre-sale price estimates range from $100 to $50,000, and items will include certificates of authenticity by Heritage Auctions and John Wayne Enterprises.
