There are many things we can do for "the cure" these days. We can wear ribbons, buy products in a specific color, post on our Facebook walls or all of the above. Although there are as many causes as there are ills to cure, Dallas' own Susan G. Komen for the Cure has lead the pack in this type of advocacy with its efforts against breast cancer. The organization started the movement with, well, movement -- the act of putting one foot in front of the other. Even though they are also behind the pink ribbon retail phenomenon, people aren't exactly trading in their tennis shoes in favor of shopping. The first Susan G. Komen Dallas County Race for the Cure was held in 1983 and had 800 participants. It has since grown to more than 26,000 runners and walkers. The event itself extends to 122 local affiliate chapters across the country, and it’s the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, attracting more than 1 million participants since 2005. Ready to lace up your kicks and pound the pavement? The 2011 Susan G. Komen Dallas County Race for the Cure begins at 6:30 a.m. October 15 at NorthPark, 8687 N. Central Expressway. Registration is $20-$180. Call 214-750-7223 or visit komen.org.
