Earlier this year, The Mixmaster, the Observer’s arts blog, took part in the 24-Video Race at the Angelika. The stay-up-all-night battle results in one super-fun weird piece of cinema. Feeling left out? Don’t. Now comes 48 Hours of Hell, which, surprisingly, does not involve sitting in a windowless room with the cast of Most Eligible Dallas. No, it’s a horror-themed video race — maybe the only one in the world, the website claims — sponsored by the Video Association of Dallas and the Dallas Film Society, among others. Beginning October 21, filmmakers will take prompts given by the 48hoh.com team and turn them into four-to-eight minute horror films. Last year’s prompts — a theme, location, a prop and a line of dialogue — were “backstabbing,” “kitchen,” “knife” and “look Ma, no hands!” Sounds hard as hell to make in 48 hours, but there’s a fancy reward: The top two videos will receive a cash prize and the opportunity to have the film screened at Silver Cinemas in Denton. You can register your team at 48hoh.com (fees apply) and keep a lookout: They’ll be publishing the prompts for this year’s film race on October 21.
