Usually the word bootleg isnt something that artists take kindly to. But downtowns Plush Gallery has no problem with the word -- at least as it relates to Eric Doeringers Cowboys. Doeringer doesnt actually copy other artists works, but their process -- scanning, cropping and retouching to make something that is created, not stolen. But its an admittedly fine line. Doeringer, a re-photographer, remakes Western-themed images that were originally remade by the controversial artist Richard Prince, who in the 1970s became known for photographing advertisements so that viewers could experience them in a different context. Touchy, sure, but its not an insignificant genre, as demonstrated by Plushs decision to showcase it during the one-year anniversary celebration of its reopening. Eric Doeringers Cowboys will be on view from noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and by appointment through November 12, at Plush Gallery, 918 Dragon St. Admission is free.
