More About

Greater minds have filled countless pages trying to articulate a definition of art, but all we know is that it seems to come from a source greater than pure education or formal training. This fall, the Pollock Gallery at SMU celebrates underappreciated American artists in its exhibition Self-taught Masters of American Art, which features works from private collections throughout Texas. From James Castle, who, born deaf, communicated entirely through drawings and found art to Chelo González Amezcua, who spent much of her life working at a local five and dime, the exhibition’s artists offer a reminder that for all of its advantages, a prestigious conservatory education cannot offer everything. Running from October 24 through December 3, the exhibition is free and located in the Pollock Gallery in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center at 3130 Dyer St. on the SMU Campus. For more details, call 214-768-4439.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: Oct. 24. Continues through Dec. 3, 2011
