Not in calendric sync with the other big Asian New Year celebrations (Chinese New Year, Tết, etc.), Japanese New Year traditionally brings all of the fun, festivities and tasty treats to us on the first day of the new year. Luckily for us, the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth is presenting their 12th annual Mochitsuki Celebration this weekend, which is perfect for those of us who spent New Year’s Day in a haze of hangover misery. You’ll be able to observe the making of mochi (a Japanese rice cake traditionally served for New Year) in a mochitsuki ceremony, and you can sample the mochi with toppings like anko (sweet red bean paste), kinako (roasted soybean powder) and Sendai specialty kurumi (walnut paste) as you spend the afternoon enjoying games, origami, flower arranging and a variety of live performances. Get your celebration on from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday in the cafeteria of Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., 2801 Telecom Parkway in Richardson. Admission is $5 for Japan-America Society members and $8 for nonmembers, with discounts for children. Call 214-342-2022 or visit jasdfw.org.
Sun., Jan. 15, 2-5 p.m., 2012
