It’s the day after Valentine’s Day and you need a little grit to get the too-sweet taste of chocolate out of your mouth. You need to get far, far away from a world of dinner reservations and floral arrangements and all things sappy, and the cinematic gods have united to bring you not one but two options that are about as far away from sentimental schmaltz as you can get. Option No. 1 is the new documentary I Am Bruce Lee, which explores the short life of the martial-arts icon and the lasting impact he left both on filmmaking and the sports world. The man who is credited with the creation of mixed martial arts proves fascinating in this compilation of interviews, archival footage and bad-ass martial arts sequences. But if Bruce Lee ain’t your thing, perhaps a little Spike Lee will do the trick. Option No. 2 is a 35mm print of Spike Lee’s exploration of racial tension, Do The Right Thing. The vivid, sweltering masterpiece will leave you reeling all over again, making this a perfect foil for your Hallmark aftertaste. I Am Bruce Lee screens at the Studio Movie Grill, 11170 North Central Expressway, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $9.50, and may be purchased at iambruceleemovie.com. Meanwhile, across town, Do The Right Thing rolls at the Texas Theatre, 231 West Jefferson St. Visit thetexastheatre.com for tickets and show times.
