Oh Say Can You Sing?

Like to play the ponies? Think you can sing? Then put your mouth where your money is a take a real gamble — singing the national anthem at Lone Star Park. The horse track is inviting soloists, duos, groups, choirs and instrumentalists to try out for a chance to perform The Star-Spangled Banner to open one of its 79 racing dates in the upcoming season. All you have to do is remember the words, manage a one-and-a-half octave range (a capella for vocalist) and be willing to have your two-minute performance broadcast live on the track's JumboTron while park officials judge you. Winners later will get to repeat the performance before a racing crowd, all in exchange for four box seat tickets the day of their performance, when they can do something less risky, like betting the mortgage on a 30-1 shot. Auditions take place from 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. at 1000 Lone Star Parkway. Walk-ups are welcome, but it's best to call (972) 263-RACE (7223) to reserve your funeral … er audition slot, that is.
