Nine DFW Acts To Catch at SXSW

Ah yes, 35 Denton is behind us, but there's another festival called SXSW that a lot of people seem to be excited about. Keep up with DC9 at Night for daily dispatches.

Here's a list of acts you might want to check out, should you be in Austin March 14-18. See DC9 at Night for the accompanying mixtape.

Nervebreakers

Seminal Dallas punks who opened for the Sex Pistols at the Longhorn Ballroom in 1978. They have a new album on Get Hip, Face Up To Reality.

Mind Spiders

The Denton/Fort Worth punk group just released its second fantastic LP, Meltdown. Live is how you want them.

Nervous Curtains

This Dallas synth trio also just released their second fantastic album, Fake Infinity.

Botany

Denton's Spencer Stephenson, part of the solo aural experiment movement that's happening in North Texas right now.

Fungi Girls

They say they're from Cleburne, but they still write good garage-pop songs that get lodged in your cerebellum. Some Easy Magic on HoZac Records in 2011 was a repeat jammer.

Sundress

I've been told they have some of the "best cheekbones in local music." Fans of British '90s rock, take note.

Tum Tum

This Dallas rapper's new track, "How We Chill," featuring Paul Wall and Smoke DZA, points to what his upcoming mixtape might sound like. Respect the hustle.

Bad Sports

Singer/guitarist Orville Neeley is in Austin playing in several bands and producing seemingly every group that stumbles out of Beerland, while the other two members of the Denton-bred Bad Sports are currently kicking it in Mind Spiders. When they converge live there's magic.

Ruby Jane

Seventeen-year-old Dallas-born fiddler Ruby Jane Smith now resides in Austin, and she's had quite the ride, playing with Willie Nelson and performing at the Grand Ole Opry. A new June full-length will follow up 2010 EP Feels Like Home.
